100 years ago 1909
A large group of Lannon men engaged themselves in harvesting ice from the Howards quarry pond.
The Wallen-Grunz Quarry Co. purchased some dwellings on the west side of Lake Shore Quarry for a possible move to downtown Lannon.
50 years ago 1959
Lisbon had a womens club called the Lisbonette Homemakers Club.
The Lannon Fire Department gained some qualified respirator operators and the equipment to administer oxygen. (The departments telephone number was 4334.)
25 years ago 1984
Mike Hyland was the coach of the Hamilton girls basketball team.
The Rich Ludka boys basketball team powered past Arrowhead at the Hartland gym, 52-34, for an 8-2 record, good enough for second place in the Braveland Conference. Al Van Mullem scored 34 points.
The Rev. Terry Brown, 29, of St. James Catholic Church, died of leukemia.

Firefighters from three local communities fought a massive blaze at H&H Auto and A Plus Foreign Auto that cost the two shops about $500,000 in damages.
Nick Quartaro, Lannons longest serving village president (25 years), died at 68.

The Lisbon Lighthouse Baptist Church on Howards Lane went from 4,000 to 9,000 square feet on its 20th birthday.
Janet Stolper died Feb 1 at 78. Born a Lisbon farm girl, she was a charter member of the Sussex Lioness Club.

100 years ago — 1909
Lisbon farmer Charles Brown, 67, died. Born Dec. 17, 1841, in New York, he was married twice: first to Mary Greengo, then to Emma Greengo. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery.
50 years ago — 1959
Sussex residents Ted Tetzlaff and Bobby Jones scored a combined 27 points playing for Menomonee Falls High School as they beat Muskego High School, 102-77.
Milton Mantz, an executive of the local Mammoth Spring Canning Co., also represented Farmers Mutual Insurance of Madison.
25 years ago — 1984
The seventh annual Sussex VFW Tidily Winks state tournament was held Feb. 18.
The Sussex Fire Department held its 62nd annual appreciation dinner commemorating the Jan. 30, 1922, Sussex Main Street School fire.
Sussex Fire Chief Arne Peterson retired after 33 years with the department.
10 years ago — 1999
The Sussex Sun had eight pages of help wanted advertisements.
Work on the Pauline Haass Public Library roof to repair the damage inflicted by the Jan. 2 blizzard was completed at a cost of $27,000.
the Sussex Teen Center picked Dan Unruh as its new director.
The Sussex Sled Bugs had a pig roast at the Sussex Inn.

Greg Zoellick was named the Sussex Firefighter of the Year.
Richard Martin retired from the Lisbon Plan Commission after 35 years.
Lisbon held a public discussion of a possible town center at Highway 164 and Howards Lane that drew 50 people.

100 years ago — 1909
Maxine Elliott of Lisbon came down with a serious case of diphtheria.
Lisbon pioneer Jerry Smith was also very ill, and his family gathered at his central Lisbon home for what could be a final visit.
Adelaide Weaver, the young daughter of Ed Weaver, caught the mumps.
50 years ago — 1959
Halibut steaks cost 39 cents a pound at the A&P. Sardines sold for 29 cents for three cans.
Sussex grade school children attended the Milwaukee Shrine Circus.
A Valentine’s dance for Lannon teenagers was sponsored by the Lannon VFW Butina-Zimdars Post.
Alaska became the 49th state this year.
25 years ago — 1984
Hamilton’s John Mueller took the 112-pound conference wrestling championship with a 22-0 performance.
Postage stamps cost 20 cents for first class mail.
Boy Scout Pack 95 collected tons of newspapers for a fundraiser.
The Sussex Teen Center met at the former Orchard Drive School, sharing the building with the Senior Citizen Nutritional meal site and the Sussex Library.
10 years ago — 1999
Dan Heckman was named coach of the Hamilton girls basketball team.
A border agreement pushed by Sussex Village President Pat Bartlett and Lisbon Chairman Gerry Schmitz moved forward.
Sussex scored a record-setting high of 67 degrees Feb 11.
5 years ago — 2004
The members of the Sussex Village Board were Roger Johnson, Vicki Braden, Greg Goetz, Fred Gallant, Al Olmstead and Ralph Benka and Village President Mike Knapp.
Four Sussex boys who vandalized a Sussex Village Park bench were sentenced to community service work at the park that summer and ordered to repair the bench.

100 years ago – 1909
Sarah Collins, born in 1886 in Menomonee Falls, died in Lannon, where she had lived for the previous 12 years. She had been staying with the James Walsh family in Lannon. She was buried in St. James Catholic Church Cemetery. The Rev. Scheidel officiated.
50 years ago – 1959
The telephone number for the Lannon Fuel and Stone Co. was 4684.
A local newspaper advertised a two-bedroom apartment for $85 a month.
The Willow Spring 48 Club’s monthly meeting drew 57 members (eight were absent). Oscar Greib was the club’s co-chairman.
25 years ago – 1984
Lisbon resident Tim Hogan, who opened the National Trophy and Awards store Nov. 15 the previous year, opened a store in downtown Sussex.
The Lighthouse Baptist Church, which had its organizational meeting in Sussex Village Park, held later meetings at the Sussex Senior Center (the former Orchard Drive School).
10 years ago – 1999
Hamilton senior John Plese won the W.I.A.A. wrestling regional championship at 171 pounds.
Lannon’s Richard Wnuk was inducted into the Land O’ Lakes Baseball Hall of Fame.
Lisbon nixed adding a sixth police officer.
Burglars stole cigarettes, booze and about $650 from Sussex Liquor.
5 years ago – 2004
Lannon met massive opposition to its sharply raised industrial sewer bills at packed meetings in Village Hall.
Sussex eliminated the traditional spring brush pickup, opting for just a once-a-year pickup in the fall.
Josh Pinter, at 34-3, qualified for the W.I.A.A. state wrestling tournament.
Hamilton High School named John Damato its new football coach.
