100 years ago — 1909

Rev. C. W. Haywood married Eunice Davidson of Sussex to Frank Harris of Pewaukee in a major wedding just before the New Year at the Sussex Methodist Church.

50 years ago — 1959

Gaylord Nelson was the state’s governor-elect.

The Sussex Teen Haven, founded in 1946, completed a very successful year.

Civil Defense courses were offered in Sussex.

A one-pound box of saltine crackers cost 27 cents at the A&P, but the same box cost 25 cents at National Tea.

25 years ago — 1984

Terry Zignego was the Sussex Library’s librarian.

The library changed its Wednesday hours from 3 to 8 p.m. to noon to 8 p.m.

Christmas Eve temperatures went down to –24 degrees.

Lisbon farm lady Frieda Tutzke, 85, died Dec. 27.

10 years ago — 1999

A 15-inch blizzard Jan. 2 caused white-out conditions.

Ron Evert filed his nominating papers to run for the Lisbon Town Board.

5 years ago — 2004

Arthur and Theresa Jochman and their daughter, Jessica, escaped a house fire at their Lisbon home in Lynndale Farms West, but lost their home and two cars to the flames.

Walt and Donna Wegner celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Walt had been a Hamilton teacher, football coach and assistant principal during his 1961-91 career.

100 years ago — 1909
Judge Griswold granted a default divorce to Hilda Stacy of Lisbon from Fred Stacy Jr., whom she had married in 1904,for infidelity. She regained the right to use her maiden name, Hilda Ray.
50 years ago — 1959
Lannon celebrated its 10th Land O’ Lakes Division championship in 11 years with a banquet. The main speaker was Lisle Blackbourn, newly appointed Marquette University varsity football coach. Ralph (Bud) Reimer was the team’s MVP.
Fresh fryer chicken cost 29 cents a pound at A&P.
25 years ago — 1984
Aqua Fun Pools on Waukesha Avenue was torn down Aug. 17 after a fire.
T he temperature went below freezing 10 days in December.
Hamilton conducted an integration study to comply with a requirement for suburban schools to accept Milwaukee transfer students
10 years ago — 1999
The Lisbon Plan Commission rejected a firewood factory-nursery at the former Noth End Quarry site off Good Hope Road.
The Knights of Columbus donated $2,000 from its recent lawn tractor raffle toward the new $3.7 million St. James Catholic Church.
5 years ago — 2004
Lisbon saw a contested elecion for two seasts on the Town Board in the April election: appointees Robert Williams and Darrell Rupnow against Ronald Esser and Joseph Osterman, respectively.
The Lisbon Police Department elevated Diane Matuszak from police officer to detective, pending confirmation by the Town Board.

100 years ago – 1909
Sarah Collins, born in 1886 in Menomonee Falls, died in Lannon, where she had lived for the previous 12 years. She had been staying with the James Walsh family in Lannon. She was buried in St. James Catholic Church Cemetery. The Rev. Scheidel officiated.
50 years ago – 1959
The telephone number for the Lannon Fuel and Stone Co. was 4684.
A local newspaper advertised a two-bedroom apartment for $85 a month.
The Willow Spring 48 Club’s monthly meeting drew 57 members (eight were absent). Oscar Greib was the club’s co-chairman.
25 years ago – 1984
Lisbon resident Tim Hogan, who opened the National Trophy and Awards store Nov. 15 the previous year, opened a store in downtown Sussex.
The Lighthouse Baptist Church, which had its organizational meeting in Sussex Village Park, held later meetings at the Sussex Senior Center (the former Orchard Drive School).
10 years ago – 1999
Hamilton senior John Plese won the WIAA wrestling regional championship at 171 pounds.
Lannon’s Richard Wnuk was inducted into the Land O’ Lakes Baseball Hall of Fame.
Lisbon nixed adding a sixth police officer.
Burglars stole cigarettes, booze and about $650 from Sussex Liquor.
5 years ago – 2004
Lannon met massive opposition to its sharply raised industrial sewer bills at packed meetings in Village Hall.
Sussex eliminated the traditional spring brush pickup, opting for just a once-a-year pickup in the fall.
Josh Pinter, at 34-3, qualified for the WIAA state wrestling tournament.
Hamilton High School named John Damato its new football coach.

100 years ago — 1909
Newspaper headlines blared: “Beware of Bleached Flour” because the U.S. Government declared flours bleached with nitrogen peroxide a violation of the “pure food laws.”
The Citizen’s Bank of Menomonee Falls installed safety deposit boxes that can be rented for 75 cents a year.
50 years ago — 1959
Frank Bolongia was the Sussex Main Street School principal.
Sussex’s election contests included the posts of assessor, justice of the peace and constable.
The Sussex village clerk was Milo Hardiman, the village president was Roy Stier.
25 years ago — 1984
Alioto’s Italian & American restaurant on the northwest corner of Waukesha Avenue and Lisbon Road charged $3.49 for a 6-ounce charbroiled filet mignon with spaghetti, bread and butter.
Gordy Boucher offered new cars from $5,225 and Blazers for $8388, and financing at 9.9 percent interest rates.
William Bathke petitioned to change Kneiske Drive to Holly Lane because, he said, Kneiske is too hard to spell.
10 years ago — 1999
Lisbon Town Board candidate Ron Evert filed an unofficial complaint with the Waukesha County District Attorney, charging that the board was too secretive and violated the state open meetings law.
Russ Ehlers was the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department lead deputy in Sussex.
5 years ago — 2004
A ful-time police officer earned $16.64 per hour, or $34,611 per year, in the Town of Lisbon. Part-time Lisbon police officers earned $15.42 per hour.
The Hamilton High School basketball team won an overtime game against archrival Menomonee Falls, 48-42, with substitute Jake Rasbornik scoring the winning basket overtime.
