100 yrs ago – 1911
In a sad Lannon tale, Louis Schneider has been granted a divorce from his wife on proof of desertion.
Many people from Lisbon and Sussex went to a Menomonee Falls July 4th affair in 1861, just as the civil War was getting started. The big event was the booming of the very first cannon made in Wisconsin at the Milwaukee Old Eagle Foundry. Meanwhile, Lannon put together an all star team of players from Lannon and Menomonee Falls for a game against Milwaukee all stars for July 4 entertainment.
50 yrs ago – 1961
The 1911 built Sussex Farmers & Merchants Bank on Main Orchard has had an interior remodeling. Officers of the bank are Esther Bast, manager; Joseph Derivan , assistant, and newly hired teller, Mildred Radenbach.
The Rev. R.C. Mooney is the pastor of Sussex St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.
Bacon cost 45 cents a pound.
Sussex playground programs have begun along with swimming lessons at the Mammoth Spring Canning Co. water filled quarry.
25 yrs ago – 1986
Harry and Clara Zimmerman, former area farms (Town Line Rd., near Hamilton) are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. After 47 yrs of farming, they sold out in 1973.
Tom McGinnity, Richmond School Administrator, is leaving.
A man’s body, with a gunshot , was discovered in a hayfield of Plainview Rd., east of Highway J (today Highway 164).
Charlie “da barber” Roginske, 94, will be the Lions’ Daze Parade Marshall.
10 yrs ago – 2001
Gypsy moths are invading Thousand Oaks in Lisbon.
Lannon approves Whispering Ridge on the former Joeck’s farm on Highway 74, east of Town Line Rd.
Killarney’s is now six months old at the corner of Waukesha Avenue and Main Street. Irish food is the common item in the bar/dining room.
Kurt Wolfendale is into his fifth year running the Wolfendales Restaurant in west-mid Sussex.
The Lannon Lions honored two of their longtime leaders, Mark Sprague and Mike Grim.
5 yrs ago – 2006
Two dead birds confirm that West Nile Disease is present in Waukesha County (including a crow from near the City of Pewaukee).
The recently promoted Lisbon house and property keeping regulations is drawing fire from Lisbonites.
Jim Gasper is in his seventh year as manager of the Sussex Land O’Lakes. He has been with them for 33 years.

100 yrs ago – 1911
Menomonee Falls will have the Village Hall bell rung after July 12, as part of the new Menomonee evening curfew ordinance for children roaming the community.
A local ad for “soda water” lists these flavors: Ginseng, lemon sour, root beer, cherry, orange phosphate, ginger ale, texatone and cream soda.
The Lake Five Resort had a gun shooting contest on its grounds.
50 yrs ago – 1961
Already 145 have signed up for youth swimming lessons at the Sussex Quarry at the Canning Co., a lot more than expected.
Three 29-ounce cans of sliced Del Monte peaches in heavy syrup cost $1.
William Zlimer who served 31 years as chairman of the Town of Lisbon died July 10. He served from 1924-55. In 1954 he was elected Waukesha County Board Chairman.
25 yrs ago – 1986
Lisbon Fire Department officer Doug Brahm had someone enter him in the Lisbon-Sussex sesquicentennial cookie contest with store bought Oreo cookies. He won the “Booby prize”.
Bing cherries are 99 cents a pound at the Sussex PDQ store. Bacon is $1.49 a pound.
The Carousel fast food custard near Richmond School is offering “buckets of chicken.”
Matt Larson received the $50 first place money for the sesquicentennial beer barrel throwing competition.
10 yrs ago – 2001
Strikers at the Sussex Corporate Center Huffy plant claim that Huffy is using alien workers.
Sussex Village Park will be the site of the annual Land O’Lakes all-star game.
Gerald Schaut, a Hamilton School District employee from 1988-98, and most notably, principal at Maple Avenue School has died from leukemia in his retirement state of Arizona. He was 64.
5 yrs ago – 2006
After two months of suspension and a $2,050 investigation, Police Chief Terry Martorano is back at work.
There is a seven hour gas line fire on Highway 164 and the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.
The new Sussex Dental office had a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Lannon, the 2005 Western Division champs, were beaten in Land O’Lakes baseball by Sussex, 5-2.

100 years ago – 1911
The Lannon Brass Band furnished the music at a recent local picnic and then went to Menomonee Falls for the St. Paul’s Church picnic.
Andrew Weisner has rented the McCarty Tavern in Lannon (Whiskey Corners).
Mr. and Mrs. A.E. Pollard of Lannon, with son Seth spent about a week with relatives in Oshkosh and then later at St. Charles. Ill.
There is a competition for stone cutters as several local curbstone cutters have left for Red Granite to make granite paving stones.
50 years ago – 1961
Downtown Sussex saw the recent family reunion of the Burt Harris family. Historical note: the hill from Plainview Road down to Howard Lane on Hillside Road is known as “Harris Hill” after Burt’s forefathers.
Six yards of screen top soil cost $13.50 delivered.
Sussex farmer Otto Paul Abel attended a two day meeting at the Renk Seed Company sales conference in Portage, Wis. Renk is introducing six new hybrid corn varieties this year for bigger farm yields and resistance to disease.
25 years ago – 1986
Two new Sussex Village Park playground toys were installed, the astronaut space explorer and a stage coach. Cost: $2,000.
Lannon has been tested by the DNR and a substantial number of wells (24 percent) are contaminated.
Finally all hurdles have been crossed and the Lighthouse Baptist Church will go up on Howard Lane in Lisbon.
Kay Gansemer is the president of the Sussex Lioness Club.
10 years ago – 2001
Pitchers for the Hamilton boy’s baseball team are, among others, Jay Wanner and Mike Gest.
Gasoline went up .08 cents this week to $1.51.9.
Groundbreaking has occurred for the new Sussex Senior Center.
The Lannon baseball field has a Waukesha County Historical Society marker dedicated at Joeck’s Field, as Lannon is declared the baseball capitol of Waukesha County.
The annual Lions Daze Festival had a Hamilton freshman, Kellyn Johnson, wins the women’s side of the 5k run.
5 years ago – 2006
Russ Lang has been named to the Sussex Baseball Hall of Fame. He joins his brother, Keith.
The Sussex Lisbon Pauline Haas Library building celebrated its 10th year in its new building.
The estimated Lisbon population for 2005 is 9,733 – up from 9,359 in 2000. Estimated Sussex population for 2005 is 9,815, up from 8,828 in 2000.

100 yrs ago – 1911
In Lannon, E. P. Davis is elected the clerk of Lannon Elementary School.
Let it be noted that the first cannon shot by a Wisconsin manufactured cannon (the Old Eagle Foundry Co. of Milwaukee) as the Civil War was starting was fired at a July 4, 1861 patriotic picnic in Menomonee Falls by Lannon resident Eli Keeler, who was 16 at the time.
50 yrs ago – 1961
Earth was broken July 23 for the new Hamilton High School building.
R. H. Realty, Inc., is offering 1,600 square foot homes in the Lisbon-Menomonee Falls area with lot for $22,900; includes a two-car attached garage, two-way fireplace, lannon stone, painted and varnished.
Area lots of 3/4 acre are going for $1,900; acre lots for $2,600 to $3,000.
25 yrs ago – 1986
Mike Bub, only two years at the helm, has handed his resignation at the coach of the Hamilton boys basketball team.
The Sussex Lioness and Lions Clubs have a husband-wife set of presidents, Raymond and Gus Gansemer. Both were on the Lions float in the annual parade for Lions Daze.
Special guests at Lions Daze were the Busch beer eight Clydesdale horse hitch.
Tombstone Pizza in Sussex Industrial Park has been sold to Kraft Cheese.
10 yrs ago – 2001
Hamilton student, 15-yr old Joshua Bailey, was found dead on the downtown Sussex section of the Bug Line Trail. Police investigators established that he died of “huffing”.
A former Lisbon snowmobile safety teacher and the Sussex Lions Club youth flag football director has been arrested for child enticement.
Merton is endeavoring to annex 70 acres from the Town of Lisbon.
Sussex Recreation has a Monday night tennis league.
5 yrs ago – 1986
The average selling price of Lisbon home is $305, 938, while in Sussex, the average is $293,336.
Sussex’s Business Enterprise is 28 year old with Paul Handlos and Paul Schmidt in leadership rolls.
Lizzi Stout of Lisbon is named “Fairest of the Fair.”
Waukesha County is notified that it can expect the Emerald Ash Borer to decimate thousands of ash trees locally.
