100 yrs ago – June 1, 2011
The annual Memorial Day ceremony noted that the veterans of the Civil War are quickly dying off. A Waukesha County Civil War monument has been ordered at a cost of $4,000 from an Eastern firm. It is bare, white granite, and 39-feet tall. It will be dedicated on Sept. 10 to remember the Battle of Chickamauga (south of Chattanooga) where many Wisconsin and Waukesha soldiers fought and died.
50 yrs ago – June 1, 1961
Paul Cain is the manager of the Sussex Land O’Lakes Baseball team that beat Lannon 10-4 with first baseman Arne Lemke and pitcher Jerry Tetzlaff doing the damage to Shupe DeCristafaro’s Lannon LOL team. Lemke was 5 for 6 with 4 RBIs. One hit was a two-run homer. Jimmie Jones scored four runs for Sussex. Tetzlaff scattered 13 hits to Lannon with Dick Gruetzmacher getting three.
25 yrs ago – June 1, 1986
The new Hamilton Athletic Booster Club tickets/concession building was adorned with artwork by Wendy Fryda.
James F. Sensenbrenner will run for his ninth term for U. S. Representative.
The Sussex Fire Department torched the former Magnusson home in east Sussex on Highway 74.
The Hamilton boys track team won the Braveland Conference meet.
10 yrs ago – June 1, 2002
The Sussex Village Board wants overpasses for the Canadian National Railroad at the three grade crossings in the village.
Roger Johnson is leading the drive to start a Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society.
The new Hamilton Band Director is Jon Waite.
The Hamilton girls track team won the area sectional track meet and will go to state.
Five yrs ago – June 1, 2006
Rita Hahn, who lives on Bowling Green Street, had her large, front-lawn tree struck by lightening. The bolt damaged underground gas lines.
A ground-breaking was held for the Sussex North Shore Bank. Candy Walecki will be the branch manager.

100 yrs ago – June 8, 1911
Waukesha Beach amusement park on the south shore of Pewaukee Lake is now open for the summer.
The case, US vs Standard Oil has been decided with the monopoly of Standard Oil now broken up.
The shortest line to the Pacific Northwest is now in place and it comes through Lisbon.
50 yrs ago – June 8, 1961
The Sussex Fire Department held a ladies night banquet with dancing at Sussex Community Hall. Ken Miller’s orchestra provided the music.
The Sussex Seventh  Grade class took a field trip to the Milwaukee Art Museum, Jones Island, the airport, and the Cinerama*. The eight grade visited Madison and Devils Lake.
*The 7th Grade class probably saw: SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD
Theater: Palace
Premiere: April 25, 1961
Duration: 24 weeks

With a 13-1 record, the Hamilton girls softball team took its second straight Braveland Conference Championship.
A passing truck snagged an overhead electrical line on Main Street shutting down Olde Templeton Inn and cancelling the Friday fish fry.
The Sussex PDQ super market is advertising a quart of strawberries for $1.28
The Hamilton High School class of 1986 valedictorians were Julie Becker and Agnes Bereny.
10 yrs ago – June 8, 2001
The $1,000,000 expansion of the Sussex Fire Department building is nearing completion.
The number of Sussex residents over age 65 has grown 8.3 per cent since 1990 to 713 residents. Residents age 85 and older jumped from 22 in 1990 to 80 in 2000.
James Barber, age 70, died on May 24. He was a Sussex area builder for 31 years.
The total scholarships earned by Hamilton seniors amounted to $772,000.
Mindy’s Antiques has opened in downtown Sussex. She has 41 years of experience.
The Hamilton girls track team took second at state with Jenny Prochazka winning both the shot put and discus.

In Lannon, A. Walters has purchased a 2-year-old pacer gelding.
Lannon has a double death in the Glietz family from malignant diphtheria.
Veterinarians who service Lisbon farmers are Dr. A. M. Haushalter of Menomonee Falls and Dr. David Roberts of Waukesha.
A pumping jack can be purchased for $37.50
W. T. Camp is the president of the Lannon Sunny Side Cemetery.
50 yrs ago – June 15, 1961
Sussex lost first place and a Land O’Lakes baseball game 19-14. The game lasted three hours and 22 minutes, nine home runs were hit, the contest with Calhoun. Jim Jones, Ted Tetzlaff and Bones Clarey hit homers for Sussex.
St. James catholic will graduate 29 from eighth grade.
The Sussex Home and School Club will participate in the play, “Auntie Tillie Goes to Town” at Sussex Community Hall.
25 yrs ago – June 15, 1986
Sussex Postmaster since 1976, Russel Liebundgut is retiring at age 57.
Marchese’s Danceland staged a 200-plus person square dance party.
There is a group of Lisbon residents who object to the building of the Lighthouse Baptist Church on Howard Lane.
Connie Samanske of Lisbon is a finalist in the Miss Wisconsin Co-ed Pageant.
Gus Gansmer is the president of the Sussex Lions Club.
10 yrs ago – June 15, 2001
The Wisconsin State Public Service Commission has approved the 30-inch gas pipeline that will go through Lisbon and Sussex following the right of way of the Union Pacific Railroad.
Karen Wnuk, wife and mother of some outstanding Lannon baseball players, had died suddenly at age 59 on June 8.
Hamilton has toughened penalties for extracurricular activities for participants caught smoking, drinking or using drugs.
Andre’s Restaurant at Sussex Plaza is advertising a $5.99 Icelandic cod Friday fish dinner.
Five yrs ago – June 15, 2006
The Pauline Haass Public Library recently named Joe Egle as the Outstanding Volunteer of the Year.
Horace Moran, the very first Hamilton basketball coach and member of the Wisconsin Basketball Hall of Fame, has died at age 96. He was a mathematics teacher at Hamilton when it opened in 1962.

Lisbon is asking Waukesha County authorities to inspect and improve the intersection of Town Line and Good Hope Roads.

The Sussex Lioness has installed Nanette Modjeska as its president.

The Weyer home on Sussex Main Street will be demolished.

100 years ago – 1911

The Wisconsin farmers favorite types of chicken are White Wyandotts, Rhode Island Reds and White Rocks. Many Lisbon farmers get their breeding stock for White Rocks from the Halbach Riverdale Farm in Waterford, owned by Herman Halback.

John McCarty of Vermillion, S.D. was in Lannon to take possession of the Lannon property willed to him by Thomas McCarty.

In the recent case of Lannon resident, Peter Kiefer, charged with selling liquor to minors; he was judged “Not guilty.”

50 years ago – 1961

The Northeast Unit of the Democrat Party has rented the Sussex Community Hall to have monthly meetings.

The A&P stores advertize whole chicken fryers for .29 cents a pound … cut up cost .93 cents. Private label Yucon soda water is advertized at .10 cents for 24 ounce bottles, plus deposit on glass bottles.

Miss Clara DeCaluwe Was a lifetime resident of the Town o Lisbon, member Lisbon Presbyterian Church and a graduate of North Lisbon Grade School. She was buried at the Lisbon Central Library.

25 years ago – 1986

The annual Sussex Lisbon park and Recreation swimming lessons and open swimming has started its season at the Canning Company water filled old quarry. The high and low diving boards and the two rafts are getting a lot of use.

Advertised in the Sussex Sun is a new Subaru 4WD station wagon for $9,799.

The Sussex Lions Club is constructing a 48 by 160 foot open air shelter in the Village Park.

10 years ago – 2001

Four men were honored by the Sussex Lions Club for outstanding club participation and leadership. They include Terry Marcou, Al Frantl, Gene Marx and Gabe Kolesari.

Bob Jones is inducted into the Sussex Baseball Hall of Fame and the Land O’Lakes Hall of Fame.

Paul Coburn was the MVP of the annual Super Park and Rec Hershey Track met for ages 9-14.

5 years ago – 2006

The YMCA is seeking input (and donations) for a proposed 155 acre facility on Highway 164, just north of Richmond Road.

The Sussex Lions Club has a new president, Kevin Cumming.

The gap in the Bug Line Trail through the former Mammoth Spring Canning Co. will be opened to the public.
