100 years ago –
Week of Nov. 2, 1911
Area hunters Alfred Cessar, John Huberty and John Feilsing were out hunting rabbits in Doylestown and came back with a record 93 rabbits and two squirrels on a weekend shoot.

The Bug Line Railroad had an accident on the line at Menomonee Falls near the station. It was characterized as a “head-on collision” that involved gondola cars; crushed rocks were all over the tracks.

The 1912 Ford cars are coming on the market. The Ford Model T touring car cost $690 and the Roadster $590.

50 years ago –
Week of Nov. 2, 1961
John Budde of Colgate and Ted Tetzlaff of Sussex are playing football at Carroll College.

A West Bend stainless steel 1-, 2-, 3-, 6-, and 10-quart cooking pot are suggested as a Christmas gift for $19.95.

The area Internal Revenue Service office is receiving numerous inquiries about the possibility of Cold War bomb shelters being income tax deductable. The answer is no.

Last month on Oct. 22, Margaret (Marne) Tempero, a resident of Sussex, died at age 82 at her Silver Spring Road home. A member of a prominent pioneer family of Lisbon, she was a story teller and was known for her church work and for sending out thousands of cards and letters.

25 years ago –
Week of Nov. 2, 1986
A lot of people from Sussex-Lisbon were in Waukesha to see President Ronald Reagan at the Expo Center.

Betty Mindemann, leader of the Sussex Emergency Food Pantry is asking for donations to help fill the empty pantry shelves.

The Sussex-Lisbon sesquicentennial time capsule burial in Sussex Village Park attracted 300 viewers in the light rain. It is slated to be opened in May of 2036.

Week of Nov. 2, 2001
Paul Cain, 74, a local car mechanic and gas station owner, has died. He is in the Sussex basketball Hall of Fame and a former manager of the Land O’Lakes team. At one time he was captain on the Sussex Fire Department.

The 18th annual Sussex Chili Cook-Off was sponsored and staffed by the Sussex Cooperating Churches and the Sussex Lions Club. It attracted 500.

Five years ago –
Week of Nov. 2, 2006
Diane and Richard Martin of Richmond Road have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. He has served more than 30 years on the Lisbon Plan Commission.

Following Waukesha County District Attorney Paul Bucher questioning Lisbon Supervisor Ron Evert resigned from the board.

100 years ago – week of Nov. 9, 1911
The Dent farm near Lannon has been rented by John Roberts.

The Greengo family farm on Woodside Road is advertising for, “A girl for general house work.”

Miss Frieda Radtke, daughter of Albert Radke of Lisbon, was married to John Stone of Sussex Nov. 2. The best man and witness was the bride’s brother, Fred Radtke of Lisbon. The couple honeymooned to Chicago but on their return will reside in Lisbon.

50 years ago – week of Nov. 9, 1961
Beer lovers Gettleman Milwaukee Beer is going for $2.98 per case of 24 12-ounce bottles (plus deposit on bottles).

The former principal of the Sussex Main Street School, Clinton Swanson, has died on Oct. 26. Services were held at his church, Sussex Methodist. He died of cancer at age 51. He came to Sussex in 1949 and served as principal for eight years before taking a principal job in Brookfield.

An 18-year-old Sussex-Lannon boy was arrested for burglarizing Maple Avenue School. He was caught after he dropped his wallet at the school while burglarizing it.

25 years ago – week of Nov. 9, 1986
The Sussex Jaycees made the final payment of $40,000 plus for the lighted softball concession stand, storage building.

The Hamilton girls won for the second year the Braveland Conference volleyball championship. The team was Kim Roskopf, Amy Gehl, Wendy Schwengel, Lori and Karen Heinritz, Diane Rose, Julie Metzger, Anne Haseltine, Melanie Wandsnider, Diane Nettesheim, Kim Skibski and Stacy Matuszak.

10 years ago – week of Nov. 9, 2001
James Skarda took first place in the recent chili cook-off.

Templeton Middle School will start what is hoped to be an annual Veterans Day celebration. The event will ask Hamilton School District veterans to show up on a day near Nov. 11 so students can pay homage to those who served.

Five years ago – week of Nov. 9, 2006
The hot topic on the Wisconsin November election ballot is the Marriage Amendment billed as “One Man + One Woman Marriage.”

At Sussex Village Park Land O’Lakes baseball field a memorial tree was planted for “Mr. Baseball” Bob Jones who died earlier this year. He was a 40-plus year member and director of the team.

100 years ago –
week of Nov. 16, 1911
There are 115 school districts in Waukesha County. In an all-district special meeting cleanliness was emphasized as County Superintendent of Schools G. B. Rhoads said mops should find more uses, “and not just once a month.”

In the adjacent Town of Menomonee Falls near Town Line Road a 5-year-old boy, Albert Reder, was fatally shot by his 15-year-old brother while the two were hunting rabbits.

50 years ago –
week of Nov. 16, 1961
The new St. James Church will be consecrated on Nov. 26 with Milwaukee Bishop William Cousins doing the honors.

The United States has had a “National Mobilization” and several Sussex, Lisbon and Lannon reserves and recent service retirees have been activated.

Paul’s Texaco with a 23-7 record is the runaway leader in the Falls Bowling League. The team is led by Paul Cain of Sussex.

25 years ago –
week of Nov. 16, 1986
State Rep. Lolita Schneiders’ third annual Sussex area chili cook-off at the McLaughlin Barn had a wall-busting crowd that donated $650 to the Sussex Emergency Food Pantry. There were 15 entries. Four-hundred dollars was raised through entry fees and Halquist donated another $250. Mary Jane Halquist was one of the judges with Renee Spott of Sussex winning first.

The Hamilton girls volleyball team for the first time is going to state.

10 years ago –
week of Nov. 16, 2001
Dozens of wild turkeys have taken up residence in the Village of Sussex.

The state Department of Transportation has OK’d a traffic light for Highway 74 and Town Line Road and another for Good Hope Road and Highway 74.

New officers in the Lisbon Fire Department are Lt. Dan Gabel and Capt. Renelle Staus.

Former Lisbon farmer Mahala Rankin is now raising alpacas. She harvests the wool for knitting and manure for potting soil.

Five years ago –
week of Nov. 16, 2006
Sydney B. Gissal, former Lannon fire chief and longtime Lannon trustee, has died at age 80.

Hamilton School District enrollment is 4,324 students up 107 over last year.

Both Lannon and the Waukesha Sheriff’s Department are bidding to take over Lisbon police services.

100 years ago –
Week of Nov. 23, 1911
An ad for the American Beauty Corset said it is designed for the purpose of adding to a woman’s figure. It costs $1, but in small print it says, “and upwards.”

A horse and wagon accident occurred near Marcy and Lannon Road. The wagon of sugar beets Charse Pragg was taking to Lannon lost a bolt causing the wagon to crash into a ditch severely injuring Pragg.

50 years ago –
Week of Nov. 23, 1961
Mrs. Lyle Zimmerman will be the local Sussex newspaper columnist. In her first column she reported that Peggy Manke celebrated her 10th birthday on Nov. 18. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hilbert “Hib” Manke of Maple Avenue in Sussex. Peggy entertained her fifth grade girl students from St. James Catholic School.

Sussex shoe repairman Philip Haerle has died at age 74 on Nov. 15.

25 years ago –
Week of Nov. 23, 1986
In the recent football season, Paul Nettesheim set a season record with 35 extra point kicks.

The Lighthouse Baptist Church had its ground breaking on Howard Lane in Lisbon.

In the recent election, 55 percent of eligible voters in Sussex went to the polls.

Sussex will lose two historic Main Street homes, the Richard Weaver home and the Buck-Shirly Morgan home near F&M Bank.

Brian Gasch and Lannon Fire Chief Syd Gissal got an Eagle Scout honor for Gash as he passed out 1,200 telephone stickers with the Lannon fire rescue number.

10 years ago –
Week of Nov. 23, 2001
Lisbon will have two full-time police officers next year.

It took the Pauline Haass Library nine years to lend out 1 million items but only six more to lend 2 million.

William Truttschel Sr., a resident of Sussex-Lisbon for 37 years, died at age 74 at his Florida home. Truttschel was an outstanding Hamilton High School athlete.

Lisbon files a lawsuit challenging Merton’s annexation of about 80 acres.

Week of Nov. 23, 2006
The new Sussex North Shore Bank under manager Candy Walacki has commissioned a piece of artwork by Scott Hefti called the “Essence of Sussex.” The bank has it on display and a framed copy was also donated to the Sussex Lisbon-Area Historical Society.

100 years ago –
week of Nov. 30, 1911
Butler was swayed by heavy winds as the day of early winter saw temperatures of 75 degrees turn into near zero readings.

The big news is that down in Kenosha police have banned “bad dances” including the grizzly bear, turkey trot, moonlight waltz and similar dances. Bar owners were warned that young girls, less than 18, will be escorted out of saloons and taverns.

50 years ago –
week of Nov. 30, 1961
Chevrolet has new models including Impala, Bel Aire, Biscayne, Chevy II, Corvair and the Corvette.

The Sussex Fire Department was called to a chimney fire on Hickory Road in Lisbon.

25 years ago –
week of Nov. 30, 1986
In Lisbon, the historic Graves home by the Three Pines Restaurant has been demolished by Vulcan Materials. Local historian Fred Keller received the 1877 cornerstone and promised to give it to a future historical society.

Hamilton’s girls volleyball team finishes fifth at state.

10 years ago –
week of Nov. 30, 2001
Judy Casper is the executive director of the Sussex food pantry.

Waukesha County now has a bio-terrorism plan.

Betty Max, who has served several terms as president of the Sussex Lioness Club, has died at age 75.

Dan Lovy is the coach of the Hamilton wrestling team.

Five years ago –
week of Nov. 30, 2006
Lannon voters OK’d a municipal water system. It was first voted on in 1956.

Jerry Newman replaces David Nagler on the Lannon Village Board.

Sussex water users were asked to conserve water. The 2005 peak use was 2.61 million gallons while so far in 2006 the peak day was 2.16 million gallons.
