History of SunnysideCemetery
Theorigin of Sunnyside Cemetery is hidden in obscurity.
OnOctober 29, 1846, the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 8 in the town of Menomoneewas deeded to Joel Bancroft. Sunnyside Cemetery is located in this parcel ofland.
Thefirst burial was Betsy Waterman, age 32, who died in 1847. She is not buriednear the Bancroft lots so it is assumed that she was not related to them.
JoelBancroft died in 1848. In December of 1848 this parcel was sold to Abner Rowewho sold it to Daniel and Charity Smith in May of 1851.
On March3, 18855, the Menomonee Center Cemetery Association was organized. There wereseven recorded burials prior to this date and from their locations it is obviousthat the cemetery was platted out at some prior time, although there is norecord of a cemetery being in any of the deeds or abstracts for this parcel ofland.
On January3, 1862, one acre comprising the original plat was deeded to the MenomoneeCenter Cemetery Association by Daniel and Charity Smith. On October 1, 1888Daniel Smith’s son, George and his wife, Elizabeth deeded the First Addition tothe cemetery. This is the area from the big maple trees down highway 74, thenknown as Waukesha road.
In Juneof 1892, the name of Menomonee Center Cemetery Association was changed toMenomonee Union Sunnyside Cemetery and in June of 1894 changed again toMenomonee Sunnyside Cemetery. Later in 1894 it was re-named again to SunnysideCemetery.
In 1898 anarrow strip of land on the south and west sides containing a row of maple treeswas sold to the cemetery for $1.00 by George and Elizabeth Smith. In 1922 a 11/2 acre strip of land on the north side was purchased from Nicholas and AnnaLauer, and in 1960 a 4.022 acre parcel on the south and west side was purchasedfrom Alvin and Charles Smith.
It wasdiscovered that both the State of Wisconsin and Waukesha County claimed to haveno record of the cemetery being organized or incorporated, so on February 24,1975 the Sunnyside Cemetery Association was re-organized and incorporated inaccordance with the regulations of the State of Wisconsin. Old records in ourpossession indicate that the incorporation of the Menomonee Center CemeteryAssociation of March 3, 1855 was indeed recorded in Vol. 1, page 37 by Wm. R.Williams, Register of Deeds, Waukesha County on March 28, 1855!
As ofApril 15, 2000, Sunnyside Cemetery contains 2278 burials with probably a fewmore early burials in unmarked graves or those where stones were broken off.
Negotiations are presently under way to acquire an additional 9.6 acres behindthe cemetery for future expansion.

AGED WOMAN PASSES AWAY. Mrs. George M. Bancroft Dies at Her Home on Monday.”Amanda” Bancroft, as she was affectionately know to her manyrelatives and friends passed on to her reward at her house in the village,Monday, Mar 8, aged 82 years. At her bedside were her daughter and son. She wasin excellent health up to a week before the end, but on the evening of February25 she suffered a slight paralytic stroke, which was the primary cause of death. Her going marks the rapidly decreasing number of those rugged pioneers ofWisconsin’s early days. Mrs. Bancroft was the daughter of William and MariaMINOR of Riga, Monroe county, New York, where she was born on Mar 4,(?) 1832. Inthe year 1847 her parents came to Wisconsin by way of the Great Lakes, the tripbeing made in September and the voyage proved a stormy one. They arrived inMenomonee and settled on what is now known as the Minor farm. In the yearsfollowing the deceased and her family labored steadily to complete the home. OnNov. 4, 1849, she was united in marriage to George Bancroft. They were blessedwith four children, three of whom are now living. They are Mrs. Ella WOOD ofWaupaca, Charles, who resides here, and Bert, of Waukesha. Time had dealt kindlywith this noble pair and they were spared to celebrate their golden weddinganniversary in 1899. Mrs. Bancroft died in 1905. Of her family one sisterremains, Mrs. Jane SMITH of Milwaukee.
There are three grand-children and three great grand-children.The deceased as a devoted member of the M. E. Church. A woman of fine character, always bliging and thought…”

DENT, grew to manhood on the home farm in the state of New York, and at theage of twenty-two years was united in marriage to Miss Jean McGibbon, who wasborn in Scotland in 1799, and come to America with her father’s family when butfour years old. Her mother died on the passage across the ocean and was buriedin the sea. Her father, with his large family of children, settled in DelawareCounty, N.Y., where one of the sons, the only surviving member of the family, still lives. After his marriage Richard DENT continued to reside in the EmpireState until 1842, when he emigrated with his family to the territory ofWisconsin. They came from Buffalo by way of the Great Lakes to Chicago. Oursubject, though but a lad remembers distinctly the more interesting events ofthe journey. Chicago was then but a small uninviting place, and gave no promiseof its present greatness. He remembers landing on a pier made of tamarack poles, and that he formed quite an unfavorable impression of the place and itssurroundings. The family consisted of the parents and seven children, five sonsand two daughters. The eldest of the brothers, Joseph H. DENT, had come from thestate of New York in 1839, and by him the family was conducted to Prairieville, now Waukesha, making the trip from Chicago by team. For one year the familylived on the place of A. C. Nickell, about two and a-half miles south of thevillage, and then removed to the town of Menomonee, Waukesha County, (thenMilwaukee County) where they settled on Milwaukee & Rock River Canal land. This was land ceded by the general Government to the territory of Wisconsin toaid in the building of a canal between Milwaukee and Rock River, and consistedof a strip, ten sections in breadth, along the entire length of the proposedcanal from Milwaukee, through Waukesha and Jefferson Counties to Lake Koshkonong.
It is needless to say thecanal was never completed and only resulted in giving Milwaukee a good waterpower. An act was passed by the Legislature whereby all persons who had boughtcanal lands at twenty shillings per acre, were given a “float” or acertificate of ten shillings per acre which could be applied the same as moneyon the purchase of other lands on that strip. Thus Mr. DENT obtained his land ata comparatively small cost. The patent to Richard DENT, bearing the signature ofGov. Henry DODGE and dated August 1, 1847, is now in the possession of his son,James S., who owns the original homestead. The land was heavily timbered, butthe father and elder sons cleared it up and made of it a valuable farm. Therethe parents spent the remainder of their lives, the father dying on the 11th ofMay, 1850 and the mother, December 24, 1878.
Of the family of RichardDENT, comprising nine persons, who came together to the territory of Wisconsinin 1842, only James S. and one sister are living. Joseph H., the eldest of thechildren, who as stated above preceded the family to Wisconsin by three years, was accidentally killed in 1857, being struck by his plow-handle while plowingon his farm in Green Lake County. He left a wife, one daughter and two sons. Thelatter are still living, and both served in the Thirty-first Wisconsin Infantryin the late war. William M. died August 14, 1852. His widow re-married and isnow a resident of Milwaukee. Her daughter, Mrs. James E. DAVIS, also lives inthat city. Another of the brothers, John T. DENT, enlisted in the Thirty-firstWisconsin Infantry, and died of typhoid fever in the field hospital in Atlanta, the day after General SHERMAN’s army entered that city. The subject of thisarticle is next in order of birth. Helen is the widow of O.P. MINOR, ofCherokee, Iowa. Olive became the wife of David HALL, and died in December, 1880.Andrew B. volunteered in the First Wisconsin Infantry and was killed in thebattle of Perryville, October 8, 1862.
