Dolores E. Becker of Sussex, died at age 85 Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2015.
Under her maiden name of Gerken, she attended the one-room, stone Lisbon Plank School (today a stone museum at Halquist Stone Company on Lisbon Road). She was a big part of the massive all-school reunion that was held Aug. 9, 1990, on the school grounds and the adjacent Halquist Quarry grounds. The school existed from 1839-1951, when it was closed down and shifted to Sussex Main Street School.
Because of the reunion, in 1991 Dolores donated her mother’s 1918-42 diary reprint (nine volumes) to the Pauline Haass Library, through financial help from the Sussex Lioness Club. Her mother had lived where the Rumors south parking lot is located today.
After grade school in Lisbon, the Gerken family moved around, mostly in the Hubertus area, with Dolores coming back to Sussex a little less than 25 years ago.
She found her calling as a library volunteer and later spent 22 years as a volunteer at the Sussex Outreach Services (SOS). She was primarily involved in the clothing and housewares sections.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Chester, and three children, six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two brothers and a sister, relatives and friends.
Visitation and services were held Sunday, Feb. 8, at the Menomonee Falls Schmidt and Bartelt Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials in Becker’s name to Sussex Outreach Services.
