Golden Wedding – Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hawes
A half century of married life of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hawes was celebrated attheir beautiful farm home in the village of Templeton, Wis., Oct. 16th,surrounded by their children and their families. The dining and living roomswere decorated with yellow chrysanthemums, the wedding cake was trimmed withyellow; and the bride’s cake had fifty orange blossoms upon it. Favors were tinyyellow baskets, each containing an orange blossom. Place cards were alos yellow.
From 3 to 5 o’clock friends and neighbors called to offer congratulations.The Ladies Aid of the M. E. church, of which Mrs. Hawes has been a member formore than thirty years, and president for many years, presented her with tendollars in gold. The children’s gift to their parents was $100 in gold.
Mr. Hawes came to this country from Germany at the age of 14 years, and withhis parents, settled on a small farm south of Waukesha, later purchasing a largefarm near Baraboo, where the parents lived many years, passing on at theadvanced ages of 89 and 94 years respectively.
Mrs. Hawes, nee Sophia Von Walters, was also born in Germany, coming toWaukesha at the age of 18 years. The long and tedious journey proved too muchfor her parents, the father dying three days after arriving in Waukesha and themother following to the Great Beyond in two weeks’ time. Many were the trialsand heartaches of this family of two brothers and three sisters bereft in astrange country.
Mr. Hawes marriage to Sophia Von Walters occurred in Waukesha, Oct. 16, 1870.They went directly to Chicago where Mr. Hawes found employment in his uncle’scoal yards remaining five years. Returning, Mr. Hawes purchased land where partof the village of Templeton now stands. As his family became larger and withseveral growing boys he became a tenant on the late Wm. Weaver’s farm. Here thefamily remained nineteen years and from this home the children one by one wentout into homes of their own. Mr. Hawes later built on his remaining 26 acres inthe village, managing this farm himself and making it a model of neatness and thriftiness.He and his wife are spending their declining years in peace and plenty.
Ten children were born to this worthy couple, all of whom are living and allwere present at the golden wedding, but one son, Walter, the great distance andhis work preventing. The sons and daughters are: Mary, wife of W. H. Kramer,bookkeeper at the General Motors Works, Janesville; William, proprietor ofMeadowbrook farm, Pewaukee, who married Miss Irene Edwards; Lewis, proprietor ofHighland View farm, Lisbon, and who married Miss Ida Ochempa; Lydia, widow ofthe late Lewis Schock, East Troy; Caroline, widow of the late Dr. J. D. Lee,Menomonie, who made the supreme sacrifice in the recent war; Fred Jr., ,superintendent of an electrical crane plant in Huntington, Ind., whose wife,formerly Miss Maud McCasen, passed on Oct. 9th at her home in Huntington,leaving her husband, two children and an aged father and mother of Plainville,Wis.; Walter, professor of chemistry in Spokane High School, at Spokane, Wash.,unmarried; Elmer, salesman for the La Crosse Plow Works, who married Miss BeulahFaust; Luella, wife of Victor Hammond, a steel structural engineer, employed bythe government at Newark, N. J.; Martha, wife of Edward Carmiff, employed asconductor on the N. W. R. R.. The grandchildren are; Harvey and Howard Hawes,Gladys, Delores and Maurice Kramer, Shirley and Fred Hawes, III. Boyd and JuneCarmiff.
Their ten sons and daughters have all been successful in chosen line of workand as they gathered at this fifieth anniversary they became as little children,the mother gathering them into dinner and after singing the Doxology, each onetook his or her place at the table as they did when children.
On Sunday the family again gathered together at Meadowbrook farm when the daypassed quietly. As the evening shadows began to fall all joined in singing,”God Be With You Till We Meet Again,” and all departed to their homesto resume their various duties in life.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:15 p.m. at the Arthur D.Gasper Funeral home and 2:30 p.m. at the Methodist church at Sussex. Rev. C. W.Heywood officiated with interment at Rose Hill cemetery, Sussex, Wis.

William Frederick Hawes of the town of Pewaukee, who passed away at the Spa Mud Baths at Waukesha on June 1st, at the age of 63, was also a former Sussex resident. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hawes, Sr., resided on the farm east of this village now owned and operated by the Peter Kayser family. Will married Miss Irene Edwards and for a number of years lived on the Champeny farm now owned and operated by the Alvin Kraetsch family. Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Harvey W. of town of Pewaukee, and Howard of Milwaukee; three brothers and five sisters, and two grandchildren. Mrs. Herman Kramer, Janesville; Mrs. Lydia Shock, Janesville, Fred Hawes, Jr., Huntington, Ind., Walter Hawes, Spokane, Wash.; Mrs. Carol Lee, Menomonie, Wis.; Mrs. Edward Caniff, Elroy, Wis., and Mrs. Victor Hammond, Newark, N. J.. Funeral services were held June 4, at 2 p.m. were conducted from the William Hansen Funeral home in Pewaukee, the Rev. W. Perry Hulen, Waukesha, officiating. Sussex – Friends here were saddened to hear of the death last week of Louis F. Hawes, 55, of Pewaukee in his farm home on Tuesday night, Feb. 9,. after nearly eight weeks of illness. Mr. Hawes was a former Sussex boy, being a son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hawes, Sr., for many years residents of this vicinity. For several years he had served as engineer for Will Stone during the threshing season. The deceased was a well known farmer and threshing machine operator and had a wide circle of friends in this section of the county. Several from here attended the funeral at Pewaukee Baptist church, Rev. Schlink, pastor of the church, officiating on Monday afternoon. Mrs. George Oehmke, of Milwaukee, sang a solo entitled ” Oh What Bliss Oh What Rapture” the words of which were by Fannie Crosby and the music by Rev. A. S. Reitz, a brother-in-law of the deceased, now living in California. Burial took place in Forest Hill cemetery (Pewaukee). Waukesha Freeman, Thursday, February 16, 1933
