The familysearch.org site has Catherine or Laocadia born in 1852 Buffalo, New York, but then her three siblings, Andrew, John and Louis are born in Canada, April 1858, abt 1861, and abt 1863, respectively.

Mary (Mary) Jacoba Boisclair is born July 1869 with Christening on July 4, 1869 at St. Andrew’s Church, Saginaw, Saginaw, Michigan. Whereas Mary Heindel Reilly has the three all born in Buffalo.

LAOCADIA (CATHERINE) BOISCLAIR, b. July 02, 1852, Buffalo, Erie, New York; d. January 13, 1914.

Did the family actually leave New York and return to Canada for a number of years, approx after 1860 (they’re listed in the 1860 Federal Census for Buffalo), so was Andrew actually born (April 1858) in Canada or not?

Census 1: 1860, Age 33, carpenter, $40 in personal assets, born Canada, literate (Source: 1860 Federal Census, 1st Ward, Buffalo, New York, entry 928.)

vii. MARIA JACOBA (MARY JANE) BOISCLAIR (Source: Saginaw Library, Michigan, Vol. IV p. 112 (as recorded on two index cards in the Saginaw Library), she is recorded as Mary Jane.), b. June 22, 1869 (Source: St. Andrews Church Baptism Cert., Lists bith date.).

Possible connection: John Boisclair, conviction, May 5, 1846, Kingston Penitentary, Quebec, Canada, but Boisclair were supposed to be from Upper Canada or Ontario?

Furthermore, in French Canada, up until the late 1960s, children of Roman Catholic origin were given three names at birth (usually not hyphenated): the first, Marie or Joseph, usually indicated the gender of the child. The second was usually the name of the godfather or godmother, while the third and last given name was the name used in everyday situations. Thus, a child prenamed Joseph Bruno Jean on his birth or baptismal certificate would indicate the baby to be a boy, the godfather’s first name to be Bruno and that the child would be called Jean (and not Joseph) for all intents and purposes of everyday life. This naming convention was in the most part dropped following the Quiet Revolution (late 1960s), and is now seen much more rarely. Currently, most couples give the child the surname of the father, though Quebec civil code allows a couple to combine at most two of their surnames, with or without hyphens. Thus a couple named Joseph Bouchard-Tremblay and Marie Dion-Roy could give to their children the surnames Bouchard, Tremblay, Dion, Roy, Bouchard-Tremblay, Dion-Roy, Bouchard-Dion, Bouchard-Roy, etc. Until the late 1800s, several families also had a “nom-dit” tradition. This was a family nickname (literally a “said name”). The origins of the noms-dits were various. Some noms-dits were the warname of the first settler, while he was a soldier: Hébert dit Jolicoeur (Pretty Heart, cf. Braveheart), Thomas dit Tranchemontagne (mountain chopper). Some denoted the place of origin of the first settler: Langevin (Anjou), Barbeau dit Poitevin (Poitou). Others probably denoted a characteristic of the person or of his dwelling: Lacourse, Lépine, Larivière.

NATHALIE”NATALIE” “NATYNETTIE”E. DESAUTELS:

Lapointe is what is known as a “dit” (pronounced “dee” as in deep) name which was very commont

until a hundred years ago in the French-canadian culture. The word translates to SAID or CALLED and was used as a sort of 2nd surname. Lapointe was added to the Desautels name because Pierre Desautels the pioneer at Montreal who arrived in 1653 was given a land grant at Longue Pointe (just north of the city of Montreal but now a part of it. Several other families have also used Lapointe as a 2nd surname and few Desautels maintained its use and fewer still dropped the Desautels and kept the Lapointe. It is only important to note as a research tool as there were some statistical data recorded as Lapointe. Most persons who use the name Lapointe today are actually descendants of the

Audet-Lapointe family. About a half-dozen other families also used that “dit” name. Hope I did not confuse anyone.

OSEPHINE BOURASSA:

The U.S. Indian Census Schedule for 1885-1940 covering the Sauk and Fox, Iowa, Citizen Potawatomi, and absentee Shawnee Indians , 1899-1904 lists the six children, including a 17 year old daughter, Mary Lee, who could be Louisa. perhaps on an Indian Reservation, but no parents mentioned. Though there is a James L. Bourassa, age 41, listed directly above them. An uncle?

Chippewa Tribe?? No…census indicates they were Pottawatomes.

It appears that Josephine Boursassa was a Potawatomi Indian whose Michigan peoples were forceably removed to Kansas where she was born. At a later date some of the Potawatomi returned to southeastern Michigan where she must have met Andrew Franlin Boisclair, married and had at leasrt five children. Sometime after she died, the children were either removed by the government or sent by their father to Oklahoma to live on a reservation. They’re registered in the late 1890’s Indian Census. While there they seemed to be entrusted with a Joseph Boisclair; though there is no apparent immediate family reationship, he must have been kin to to Andrew. But why would a Boisclair be on the Reservation unless he was also of Inidan descent? Or?

The Boisclair/Boursassa children were reunited with their father and his new wife and daughter by 1900 Michigan.
