Simon J. Meister operated a brewery from 1860-1868, making Weiss beer and”syphon” (a mildly alcoholic, heavy brown beer for women and children). Thebuilding in which the brewery was housed stood at 406 Chestnut (W. Juneau Ave.)across from Gipfels Brewery. It was razed during the 1970s to makeway for the I-694 (Park East) freeway spur. He had a capacity rated at 450 barrels a year, boasted of two employees and a monthly payroll of $50.00. The brewery (pictured above) wasbuilt of Cream City brick in 1853. The stepped gable-end parapets are of the Post-Federalstyle, while the six octagonal windows under the cornice suggest the rising influence ofVictorian taste.
