BISCUIT TINS

Did you know that the British term”biscuits” actually means the American word “cookies” ?

From: lime@onyxnet.co.uk (T Dolphin)

Hello Mike

I’ve just visited you web site for thefirst time, (I’m new to the net ), it’s great , I am hoping to set up something similarhere in England though as I’m ALSO new to html it is going to take a while to get up andrunning .

The first thing that strikes me when I seeAmerican tins is the quality and space used in advertizing in England it wasn’t the”done thing” to be blatant in that area so there are a lot of highly decorativetins here and not so many with product and company names.

My collection is mainly biscuit tins inthe main from before 1939 I wouldbe interested to know if there are any places you know ofthat have English Export tins for sale or are they rare

Will you put me on the mailing list forTin Gathering it would be interesting to keep up with American interests, and if you thinkI could supply useful information at any time please drop me a line hope to hear from yousoon

Regards Tracy

Info. about Ridgeway Tea Tin

For LARice about his Ridgeway TeaTin. This is a note of history. Queen Victoria lived from 1837-1901. King George VI succeeded Edward VIII on 12-12-36 (upon the abdicationof Edward for his love, WallisSimpson), & he was the farther of the current Queen Elizabeth II. He died of a heartattack on 6-2-1952. Therefore you know that the tin was made sometime between him beingcrowned 12-5-1937, (a year after becoming king), and his death in 1952.

When a member of the Royal familypurchases from a company, The Royal can “appoint” that company with the honor ofbeing able to advertise that they are a purveyor to the Royal household, by using thatRoyal’s “crest” or “Armorial Bearings” emblem in their advertising. All over England, but especially in London where there are many businesses that arepatronized by the Royals, (and maybe for just one special item like soap, for instance),you will see the Royal’s “crest” someplace around the doorframe of that shop. Itis quite an honor for a business to receive this appointment. Most notably, the crest isseen for the Queen Mother, Prince Phillip, Queen Elizabeth II, and Prince Charles. Therefore, if 3 of them purchase/shop at a particular store, all 3 crests might be aboveor beside the doorframe.

So now we know that Queen Victoria boughtRidgeway’s tea for the last 15 years of her life, & H. M. (His Majesty) King George VIwas also a customer.

You know that Ridgeways began in 1836, sonow you could write to the export address you have on the tin just to see if someoneanswers, or you could find the address for General Foods Corp. & ask them if they haveany historical info. according to your specific questions. You could also write to theLondon Tourist Bureau (in London, not any in the U.S.) & ask them if it’s possible tolook up the Ridgeway’s current address. Also, in libraries, & maybe it’s on theinternet now, are huge volumes of books that list all the registered businesses in acity/country, & you could see about the address that way. It’s categorized by theproduct they sell. How much do you want to know? The search goes according to that :).

Hope you enjoyed the fun-type history lesson.
