SUSSEX — Carol J. Braeger, 88, of Sussex, died peacefully on Thursday, Dec. 18, 2014, at Froedert Hospital in Milwaukee.

She was born in Watertown on Nov. 8, 1926, the daughter of Louis and Elsa Buelow.
She grew up in Sullivan and attended Jefferson High School, graduating on D-Day in 1944.
Carol, a registered nurse, also attended nursing school at Madison General Hospital, and during her nursing career met and married the love of her life, the late Gerry Braeger. They settled in Sussex and raised their family. They owned and operated Braeger’s Meat Market.

Carol worked for many years as a school nurse in Hartland Arrowhead School District. After retirement, she welcomed many people to the community as the Sussex Welcome Wagon representative and later in her own business, Sussex Greetings.

She was the ultimate volunteer in her church, Redeemer United Church of Christ, and an advocate for her community. She always put others first.

For more than 50 years, she coordinated the Sussex Blood Bank, and was a dedicated member of the Sussex Lioness. Through the years she also was active in Girl Scouts of America, Sussex Food Pantry, worked closely to support the development of Sussex Park, and served on a variety of other civic committees and organizations.

Carol especially enjoyed time with her grandchildren, fishing, gardening, slot machines, baking and a big bowl of popcorn. She was an avid Green Bay Packer, Wisconsin Badger and Milwaukee Brewer fan — always favored Donald Driver and Geoff Jenkins!

Carol is the loving mother of, and survived by four daughters, Connie Barbian (Jerry Mooren) of Fort Atkinson, Patty (Bill) Roelofs of Deerfield, Jean (Jeffrey) Fero of Sussex and Beth (Bradley) Enneking, Lannon; proud grandma of Nick and Jake Barbian, Jared (Lisa) Fero, Andy (Carol) Fero and Alison Fero, William, Jack and Aidan Enneking; and great-grandma of Maxwell Fero. She further is survived by many relatives and friends in the Sussex and Jefferson County area.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Elsa Buelow; husband, Gerhardt Braeger; and infant son, Richard Paul.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Monday, Dec. 22, at Redeemer United Church of Christ, W220 N4915 Town Line Road in Menomonee Falls, from 4 p.m. until the time of the Celebration of Life Service at 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Redeemer United Church of Christ or Sussex Outreach Services are appreciated.
