Mike,

Here is a few more details for the Champeny Family. Charles was born 30 Jun 1808 in Blackford, Somerset, England and married Sarah Tyley (1809-1889) 15 March 1831 in Cheddar, Somerset, England. Charles died 04 Feb 1898 and is buried in Blackford, Somerset, England. Ann Champeny married Stephen Ryall Callow on 11 Apr 1844 in Butleigh, Somerset, England and they emigrated with Edward and his wife upon his return in 1844 to Wisconsin after his marriage. Stephen died on 16 May 1858 and Ann died on 16 Sep 1875 and both are buried in St. Alban’s Cemetery in Sussex. William Champeny’s wife was Elizabeth Greenland and they were married in 1838 in Yeovil, Somerset, England.

Joseph Champeny first wife, Mercy Stubbins, died 01 Apr 1877 and he remarried in 1878(?) to Hattie A. Smith (1853-1941) this marriage record I cannot find anywhere. Joseph died 03 Mar 1915 and is buried next to both wives in Briggsville, Wisconsin.

Edward Champeny, Joseph’s brother, married Jane Toogood in 1863 in Somerset, England. I have found the ship record of Jane and the children’s arrival but not Edward’s. George Champeny, the brother that stayed in England married Sarah Toogood on 14 Nov 1861 in Bristol, England. (I have been emailing with a Toogood in England who has helped me greatly with my research.) Norman Tyley Champeny (1846-1897) married Jane Banwell (1842-1924) 21 Nov 1867 in Somerset, England and arrived in the U.S. on 26 December 1867. They are buried in the Dartford Cemetery in Green Lake, Wisconsin.

Sorry about this disjointed effort, just got back in town and right now I cannot find some of my Briggsville records to check on some dates.

Steve

Hartland Cousin Visits General

Hartland – (Special)- Mrs. Bernice Cradler of Hartland and her husband recently visted a much decorated cousin, Brigadier General Arthur S. Champeny, who, with his wife, retired to Oxford, Kansas after 35 years of army life.

General Champeny is a native of Wisconsin, having been born at Briggsville, and has made many visits back home to his friends and relatives, the Tiley M. Champeny family at Hartland, and the Champenys at Briggsville.

Mrs. Cradler, the former Bernice Champeny, recalls that in conversation with the general she learned that he was asked to replace General Dean in Korea after Dean disappeared as a prisoner of war. However, General Champeny was not in Korea at the time to replace him.

Brigadier General Champeny officially retired July 31 and shortly before was honored at Camp Roberts, Calif., for his military achievement. He was presented with a testimonial scroll after a review of 10,000 men in his honor.

The brigadier general was assistant division commander, 7th Armored Division, and a highly decorated vertan of three wars. His honors include three distinguished service crosses, five purple hearts, two French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, and the Italian bronze medal of valor.

According to the Oxford Register of Aug. 6, which lists the general’s entire military history, General Champeny organized the present Korean Army and Navy in 1946 signing the original commissions for its officers. He was the Seoul area commander in Oct. 1950 and remained in Korea in various advisory groups until 1951.

Dairy Products Important Role

(Ed. Note: This is the seventh in a series of articles tracing the the early history of Merton township. The articles taken from a paper presented to the Waukesha county historical society by William Kuntz).

Following the establishment of the early cheese factory by Edward Fuller, a man by the name of Percy Suchard built a creamery on the banks of the Bark River just west of the Merton flour mill. This brought about a small development of dairy activity/ Suchard later sold out to Charles Champeny, who established a chain of creameries throughout the townships of Merton and Lisbon and portions of Washington and Dodge counties.

Later, the creamery was sold to Winkler brothers, John and Robert, who…

EORGE T. CHAMPENY:

George T. Champeny is a native of Delafield, Waukesha county and was born March 12, 1868. His father, William N. Champeny, was born in England and came to the United States about 1850. He was a miller by trade, and always followed that vocation — most of the time in Waukesha county — but died in Iowa, in 1871, to which state he had moved the previous year. The mother, whose maiden name was Margaret T. Hanafin, was a native of New York state and is still living, making her home on the farm in Lisbon township. She began teaching in the public schools in 1850 and continuing until 1880, with the exception of the decade from 1861 to 1871. There were four children in the family — three daughters and one son. The oldest is now Mrs. M. J. Delaney, and the third is Mrs. John E. Roets of South Milwaukee. Mary, the second daughter, is deceased, and George T. is the youngest of the family. All are natives of Waukesha county except Mary, who was born in Dodge county, and all received their primary education in the local schools. George was a student in Carroll college, in Waukesha, for a time, then spent two years at the Whitewater Normal School, and followed the profession of teaching for thirteen years, in Milwaukee county, and the city of Milwaukee. In 1901 Mr. Champeny began farming in the town of Lisbon, on the old homestead, which is run chiefly as a dairy farm, there being a herd of 12 cows on the place on an average. He belongs to the Democratic party and to the St. James Catholic church. His marriage occurred on July 24, 1894, to MIss Isabelle L. Hickey, who was born and reared in Cedarburg, Ozaukee county, Wis. Five children have been born to the marriage, viz. Norman W., John (deceased), Arol, Allen (deceased), and Margaret R., all born in Milwaukee except Allen, whose birth-place is Lisbon township.

Re: SLAHS website update: Champeny Family (email) Saturday, December 20, 2008 11:31 PM

Mike,

I have attached the short Bio article of George T. Champeny from the 1907 Memoirs of Waukesha County. The same book contains a short Bio of Michael Joseph Delaney, who is the husband of Sarah Elizabeth Champeny (an older sister of George T.). Also, in the Portrait and Biographical Record of Waukesha County, Wisconsin (1894) there is a biography of Elizabeth (Russell Martin) Champeny, wife of Edward (with portraits) and their son Tiley M. Champeny. A copy of the book is in the Sussex library.

You need to be careful with the use of the other Champeny trees online. I have found them to have significant errors in some instances. William Champeny’s wife was Elizabeth Norman (not Lotman). They were married 23 Jul 1807 at St. Mary’s, Wedmore, Somerset. William died in Mar of 1817 and Elizabeth remarried a George Tucker in 1818.

Arthur Seymour Champeny was quite a military man. He served in WWI, WWII and Korea. In each of these wars he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and earned a Purple Heart.

As far as ‘Mercy’ goes, the English census and her marriage record to Joseph Champeny has her name as Mercy Stubbins, but upon her death, Charles, their son gives her maiden name as Stebbins. Her head stone lists Elizabeth ‘Mercy’ Champeny. So it may be correct that Elizabeth was her given name. Mercy died 01 Apr 1877 in Marquette County and is buried in Briggsville.

When I have more time I will read through your Champeny Family posting and fill in some of the blanks and also make a few corrections.

Steve
