Waukesha Freeman – January 23, 1868; William places an advertisement to sell his farm.

“HOP-GROWERS, ATTENTION!”

I offer for sale my farm of 123 acres, situated one mile north of Sussex, town of Lisbon; is well watered, and there is a log house, good barn, and excellent stabling for horses, cattle and sheep on the premises. There are six acres in with good bearing hops – nearly all the German Grape variety – good hop-house, and everything needed for hop-raising. There is on the farm, 200 good bearing fruit trees, consisting of apples, plums and cherries; 40 acres of good tamarack, with plenty of poles, will be sold with the farm if desired. This is a capital chance for anyone wishing to organize hop-raising.

I will also sell 40 acres on sec 15, same town, 6 acres of which is cleared, balance timber. Also, 40 acres timber on section 10. Also, 18 acres on sec 22, consisting of excellent marsh and meadow, all situated in town of Lisbon. The property is sold for no fault, but the proprietor wishes to retire from business.

Also, S1/2, SW1/4 of sec 19, town 16, R5 – 59 acres;

SW1/4 of section 30, town 16, R5, 120 acres;

SE1/4 of NE 1/4, sec 17, town 15, R5;

NE 1/4 of SE 1/4 sec 17, town 15, R5, 80 acres.

This land is situated on the Naceedah Plains, west bank of the Wisconsin River, town of Marion, Juneau Co., and for hop-raising is equal to much of the far-famed Sauk County land. 20 cwt per acre was rasied on land near by last year, of excellent quality. Much of this land could be plowed up and planted with hops this spring, as it requires little cleaning.

About January 15, 1891, Waukesha Freeman reports that he sold 80 acres to his son(?) Thomas Crouch in sec. 14, 15, town of Lisbon for either $3,000 or $3,600.

July 23, 1891 – William (Sr. or Jr.?) visiting his sister, Mrs. Wm. Sedgwick

Waukesha Freeman, August 24, 1893 – The application of Wm. Crouch to be released from guardianship was taken up on Wednesday morning and developed many interesting points. Mr. Crouch is an old man who was placed under guardianship in 1891, after a medical examination by Drs. Wiggington and Hewitt. Later it developed that there were family differences in the case and the children believe that Mr. Crouch was competent to care for his property, and this condition finally resulted in the application in question. Note: as reported on August 31 – he is released from personal, but property guardianship is still under William Small.

It’s been a while since I visited your website and was I in for a surprise! Loved the music and all the interesting information that has been added. Spent a lot of time there today and I noticed I can add to the family of William Crouch b. about 1810 that you wrote up.

His second wife was a Nancy.

Nancy was the daughter of Thomas Hollingsworth Dent and Betsy Sturges.

She was born 3 March, 1826 Ferris Hill, Grand Gorge, Delaware, NY.

Family history had it that she had married a Crouch and lived in Lisbon, Waukesha, WI.

So, in my searching, I found her today in the 1880 Census with William. Also in the WI Vital records index “Nancy Crouch died 23 May, 1905 Waukesha.

Her father, Thomas Hollingsworth Dent was the son of Joseph Dent and Ann Nancy Tonge and was born in 1799 in Maltby le Marsh, Lincolnshire. The family left England and came to NY in 1804. His brother (my line) Richard Dent came to Menomonee with his son, Joseph Dent and they bought land as early as 1846 as noted on the Land Plat.

Haven’t found where Nancy Couch is buried yet….but hope to. Visited Waukesha, Lisbon, Monomonee about a year and a half ago and yearn to return.

Hope this helps. Please ask if you have questions.
