Death of Elisha Pearl
Another Honored Pioneer’s Life Closed
One of the early settlers of Waukeshacounty we doubt, if anyone was more highly esteemed by his many friends andfollow townsmen for his sterling integrity, genuine worth, and kindly nature, than Elisha Pearl of the town of Lisbon. Mr. Pearl has lived here over fiftyyears. He first came to Wisconsin from Windham county, Conn., in 1839, again in1841, and located near Merton. Returning east he married Sarah Trowbridge ofAshford, Conn., and in 1844 came west again to develop and improve his farm, onwhich he has resided until his death, which occurred Friday, Nov. 20th, at theage of 77 years, 8 months, and 13 days. Mr. Pearl has not been actively engagedin farming for many years, but leased his lands and lived quietly in hiscomfortable home. His health has gradually failed since the death of his wife onFeb 3, last. He was about daily however and drove to the village on Friday the6th. On his return he complained of great fatigue. In the 9th he commenced tofail rapidly, lying in a semi-comatose state the last ten days. His funeral washeld in the Merton Baptist church Monday at 11 o’clock. Of the four sons twosurvive — Edward S. of Merrillan, this state; and Eugene who resides in NewYork City; Philip H. died Aug. 14, 1887; and Frank Richmond, April 15, 1856.Philip left two children, a daughter Eugenia, who resides with her grandfather,Wells Spencer, in Hazardville, CT., and a son, Spencer, who has lived with hisgrandfather, Mr. Pearl, since the death of their mother, Mary Spencer, who diedMarch 16, 1881. Eugene Pearl and His Work
A correspondent of The Pewaukee Standard who recently visited Mr. Eugene Pearl’s crayon-studio, in the town of Lisbon, has the following to say of the artist and his productions:
“Arriving at the home of Mr. Pearl we were most cordially welcomed, and at once stated the object of our visit, and was ushered into a room so completely filled with beautiful specimens of art crayon, that for the moment we were filled with speehless awe.
Here and there were touches so true to nature that we could almost fancy we saw the motion of eye or lip intended by the artist. Before us hung a portrait of the Hon. Matt Carpenter, so very lifelike that it seemed as if it could send forth some of those ringing sentences with which the original has so often electrified the West.
Where all were so perfect, it seemed utterly impossible to designate which was the most exquisitely executed, but Mr. Pearl seems to excel in the delineation of infant features, and fine lace work. Several fine subjects drew our attention. One especially, that of a crying child, was so true to nature that a lady friend remarked that it would make a mother’s heart ache to gaze upon it.
Mr. Pearl is now on his trans-Atlantic trip, taking in all the principle cities on his outward route, and returning by way of Panama and the Gulf. The artist has stopped for a short short time at the residence of his parents and his former home, four miles north of Pewaukee, in this county, to recruit his health before starting for the Pacific seaboard, and has opened up his studio at the request of his numerous friends in this vicinity.” Waukesha Freeman, September 27, 1877
