1.NICOLAUS (LEVI) H. (BOETTINGER)2BETTINGER, SR. (?1)was born March 02, 1820 in Strausbourg, Germany (Source: 1880 Federal Census,Age 57 which would place birth year at 1822 or 1823. The 1920 Census entry forhis son Charles indicates that his father was born in Strassbourg (?),Germany.), and died February 10, 1896 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin(Source: Michael A. Notes for NICOLAUS (LEVI) H.(BOETTINGER) BETTINGER, SR.:
In the book “History ofMilwaukee’, R977.5959L2, published in 1884, an excerpt under “BoardingHouses and Saloons”,”Levi H. Bettinger, saloon and boarding-house, No.775 Pierce Street, is a native of Prussia, born in 1823. July 4, 1840 (MichaelA. Weber has it 1842) he came to America and remained four years in New YorkState, coming to Milwaukee in 1844. He was foreman for Geo. Burnham eighteenyears and drove team ten years; was in the brick business twenty-eight years inall. In 1850 he was married to Miss Angelina Brachman, a native of Prussia. Theyhave three sons and four daughters. The family are all members of the RomanCatholic Church.”
The same book had an article on his son…John G. Bettinger, the son of Nicholas and Angeline (Brauckman) Bettinger, who were both born in Prussia. Nicholas Bettinger was born in Germany on March2, 1822, and his wife on Feb 17, 1832.
The elder Bettinger immigrated toAmerica in 1840 and landed in Buffalo, New York. He remained there a year andthen, in company with five cousins, walked to Milwaukee, landing in thee city in1842. For a time he worked for a Mr. Cooper as a trapper and hunter. He was oneof the early settlers and also worked for Solomon Juneau. Subsequently he becameforeman of George Burnhams’ brick-yard, which at that early day was located onGrand Avenue (now Wisconsin Ave.). Mr. Bettinger was a fine workman, knew how tohandle men, and he remained with this firm for twenty-eight years, being intheir employee altogether thirty-two years. At the end of that time hedetermined to go into business for himself, bought some teams and engaged in thecontracting business for about eight years. After retiring from business, hespent his last years of his life on South Pierce street. Mrs. Bettinger passedto her last rest in 1897 and was followed by her husband in six months (Deathcerts. show it was 1895)…..” (Note: if this book mentions their deaths, then the orig 1884 book referenced had to be a later reprint. Mike Reilly7/27/03).
From Michael A. Weber: Owned houses onPierce St. that was known as
Bettinger’s Park.
Mary Heindel Reilly surmises that someof his cousins settled in the Milwaukee area and some possibilities are themales who were godparents for his children: Petro Bauer, Joannes Georges Barbian,Nicholas Schuh, Peter Schaus, Charles Lalle), Joseph Amann, and NicholasBettinger, Josephus Meminger, Augustus Borgers, Petrus Bettinger, George Amann.Obviously Peter is one of the cousins (or?) but does Nicholas have a cousin withthe same name or was he sponsor for one of his own children?
1859 Directory lists 2 Joseph Aman orAmann; a Joseph Meminger, saloon, 325 E. Water; Nicolaus, foreman, Ludington& Co., h cor Thirteenth and Fourteenth.

2.JOANNES (JOHN) G.3BETTINGER (NICOLAUS (LEVI) H.(BOETTINGER)2,?1)was born June 21, 1852 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin (Source: 1880 FederalCensus, Joihn indicates he and his parents were all born in Bavaria, Bayern(note: may have been looking at wrong document – Mike Reilly 7/30/03) Maria wasborn in Wisconsin, but her father in Germany and mother in Bohemia. Thiscontradicts info in Mary Heindel Reilly book. The Holy Trinity Baptism recordshows a date of June 27, 1852 and being born (no Milw County record?) on June 211852 in Milwaukee.), and died February 06, 1915 (Source: Calvary Cemetery,Burial Record, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.). He married MARIA (MARY) SCHRAM May 1878in Holy Trinity Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, daughter of MATHIASSCHRAM and BARBARA MAY. She was born March 20, 1850 in West Prussia (Source:1930 Federal Census, lists age as 80 yrs born in 1849.), and died April 22, 1935in South 92nd Street, Milwaukee (Source: Calvary Cemetery, Burial Record,Milwaukee, Wisconsin.).
Notes for JOANNES (JOHN) G.BETTINGER:
The following article is from”Memoirs of Milwaukee County”, “John G. Bettinger is one of theprominent citizens and business men who played an important part in thedevelopment of the Cream City. He was born in Milwaukee on June 21, 1852, theson of Nicholas and Angeline (Bruckman) Bettinger, who were born in Prussia….John was reared in Milwaukee and received his education in the Eight Ward and atTrinity school; he was reared in the Catholic faith and joined the church whenquite young. He resided at home with his parents until he was twenty-one yearsof age (approx 1873). For two years he worked in a distillery in Milwaukee, andthen engaged for three years in the buying and selling of horses with WirthBrothers. After his marriage (May 1878) Mr. Bettinger returned (from where?) toMilwaukee and worked for one year in a distillery, which burned, then engaged inthe saloon business at 593 Park street and continued in the business fortwenty-eight years. He was a hard worker, attended to all his business himself, and never even had a bar-tender. Mr. Bettinger owns nine cottages, a hotel onSouth Pierce Street, known as Bettinger’s Court, and he also has a two-storyframe building on the same street, between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, andanother on Twenty-ninth avenue, and a saloon on Park street. He owns a farm oftwenty acres where he now lives, and just completed one of the most up-to-dateresidences in the town. Mr. Bettinger went into the country for the benefit oftwo of his children, who are invalids. He and his wife like the country andexpect to make their home there the rest of their days. They have eightchildren….”
Additional Mary Heindel Reilly comments- ” The 1870/78 Milw City Dir. shown in his father’s history verifies Johnlived with his parents until he married, which is a tradition his childrencontinued. It is not known which two children are invalids. One might be hisoldest son, Nicholas, because he wasn’t employed. The following event must haveoccurred in John Bettinger’s younger days when he was only 27 yrs old. This is anewspaper article from the Milwaukee Sentinel, August 12, 1879, 3/8: “Lastevening John Bettinger and Fred Weidner were hauled into the lock-up for theirpart into the assault on Officers Pringle and Arnold.” John Bettinger wasquite the entrepreneur and had his fingers in quite a few pots. He seemed tohold substantial land holdings. I wonder what happened to the family and theirproperty?”

He married BERTHASCHMIDT May 05, 1879 in Holy Trinity Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin(Source: Holy Trinity Marriage Record, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.), daughter ofFERDINAND SCHMIDT and WILHELMINA DREWS. She was born Bet. The Reilly book shows her ina 1940 photo with her children. Note: Michael A. Weber has her death as Feb1942.).
Notes for NICOLAUS LEVIBETTINGER, JR.:
His daughter, Helen (Bettinger) Ode,said her father, Nicholaus, was a good man, a good provider, and had invested ina tavern. Because he was such a jolly, kind and happy go lucky man, they wantedhim in the tavern to liven it up and he eventually became an alcoholic. When hisson, Frank, was two or three years old (abt 1900) his wife, Bertha, kicked himout of the house because of his drinking.
There are several unflatteringnewspaper articles about a Nicholaus Bettinger. As it is unlikely they wereabout his father, and there isn’t any knowledge of another relative with thesame name, and especially because of Helen’s description of her father above, they are being attributed to Nicholaus Jr. The articles are all from the MilwaukeeSentinel as follows (source: Reilly book by Mary Heindel Reilly):
August 16, 1879, 8/2: “ChiefKenedy is thinking of revoking the license on which Nick Bettinger keeps asaloon and dance house. The man’s place has given police considerable trouble oflate.”
August 15, 1886, 7/5: “NicholasBettinger, a city scavenger, gave himself up at the central station at a latehour last night, reporting that he had accidentally shot Herman Wodtke, onThirteenth Avenue. Bettinger says he was shooting an air-gun at a post in hisyard, when he noticed a crowd gathering on the prairie two blocks away. Goingover there he found Wodtke bleeding profusely from a bullet-hole in his back.Believing that the ball was one fired from his gun he gave himself up. Wodtkewas in critical condition at an early hour this morning.”
August 22, 1886, 3/5: “HermanWodtke died yesterday morning from the effects of a pistol shot accidentallyinflicted a week ago by Nicholas Bettinger. Wodtke was 54 years of age andleaves a wife and three children. Bettinger was arrested yesterday afternoon, and will be held on a charge of manslaughter.”
August 24, 1886, 2/7: “The coroner’sjury yesterday exonerated Nic Bettinger from blame for the accidentalshooting of Ludwig Wudke. Dist. Atty. Williams says the verdict will notinterfere with the criminal proceedings,, however, and the Mr. Bettinger will bearraigned on Sept. 1 to answer the charge of manslaughter. Mr. Bettinger, who isspoken of in the highest terms by his friends, is much affected by the badaccident.”
Aunt Beatrice Miller says her maternalgrandfather, Nicholaus Bettinger, was killed in a ditch by horses. He was ateamster. Ellen (Ode) Luhm says he died in an excavation accident. He and histeam of horses fell into an excavation he was working on and was killed in 1902.
Two sources indicate his death in 1902but the only Nic Bettinger that matches his birth year is one dying in 1914. Noofficial source yet found for to validate the 1902 death.

Notes for HELEN BETTINGER:
“Helen was in the fifth grade whenher mother, Bertha, left her alcoholic husband, and her mother took her out ofschool to help take care of her brother Frank, who was only two or three years old. When Helen was only fifteen years old she worked in knitting mills inMilwaukee and later worked for Gridley Dairy (now Bordens) wrapping butter. These jobs were before she married.
Helen lived with her mother , andbrother, Frank, above their Uncle Herman’s tavern. It was called HermanSchmidt’s Tavern on the corner of Forest Home and West Grant Streets onMilwaukee’s southside. Later Uncle Herman sold the tavern and bought a resort onPotter’s Lake and moved there with his wife Emma. Because Frank went toCalifornia, Bertha broke up housekeeping and moved to the farm to help Helen.
After Helen married Walter, they immediatelymoved onto a farm in the Town of Muskego in Waukesha county,Wisconsin. After five and 1/2 years the prices on dropped on farm produce andmilk and they lost their entire investment. They were forced to leave the farmand move back to Milwaukee. They moved to 1423 South 12th St. in 1925 onHalloween night and eleven days later, their youngest child, Gladys, was born.
Helen lived in her home until 1979(including 29 yrs after Walter’s death), when she came to to live with herdaughter Ellen, and her husband Arnold Luhm, in Greendale. She lived with themthere for eight and 1/2 years and moved with them to a smaller home in HalesCorners, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, Helen went into a nursing home. Fifteenmonths later she broke her hip and died six days later.
Helen was a hard worker, kept a veryneat home and was loved by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
An Aunt Helen was on the 50th weddinganniversary guest list of Nettie (Tibbits) and Bill Reilly’s in Sept 1971. Billand Nettie received gifts from the Ode/Leonhardts.” Source The Reilly Bookby Mary Heindel Reilly and data from Ellen (Ode) Luhm.
