Gored to Death
A pecurliarly shocking accident caused the death of Alfred Brown, aged 59, of Sussex on Wednesday, September 26. He had cleaned out the bull pen on the farm two miles north of Sussex, which he rented to a Mr. Harling, and it is believed had led the animal out to water. Then it turned on him and gored him terribly. He managed to get outside the door and to fasten the lower part of the door.He was alone at the time and the accident is believed to have happened about 3 o’clock in the afternoon. He was brought to his home in Sussex village an hour later and died at 6 o’clock. He leaves a wife to whom he was married three years ago. All the members of his own family have passed away.
Sussex – The community was shocked last Wednesday evening to hear of the sudden death of Alfred Brown, which occurred at his home here. He was up on the farm working and was attacked by an infuriated bull and only lived a short while after being brought home. Deceased was born in Waukesha in 1859 and spent nearly all his life on the farm where he was reared. Deceased was a member of St. Alban’s church, where the funeral was held Saturday afternoon. He leaves a widow.
Dr. and Mrs. Charles Hall of Milwaukee, Frank Hall of Rio, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd of Fort Atkinson, Miss Nora Lemon of Waukesha and Mr. and Mrs. Wills Collins (Mrs. William Cooling?) of Oshkosh were here to attend the funeral of Alfred Brown.
Mrs. H. P. Long and son, Claude Bonham of King City, Mo., were called here by reason of the death of Alfred Brown.

At high noon on Sept. 29, 1909, at the home of the bride in the town ofLisbon occurred the marriage of Harvey B. Jeffery and Louise E. Hartkopf, in thepresence of about 100 neighbors and friends, who had gathered to wish the youngcouple long life and properity.
The farm was the one known as the “Robbins’ Nest” for it was onthis farm that the Robbins family, half a century ago, moved, lived and hadtheir home.
It was told at the wedding that one of the Robbins got on the edge of thenest fifty years ago and a Brown bird came along and carried her off. That birdwas present at the wedding and she recalled vividly “The time, the Placeand the Girl” who fifty years ago stood as a bride at the same place thatLouise stood and pledged her troth until death. Emily Robbins Brown was presentat this wedding after fifty years of absence. It was also noted that HenryJeffery and Cordelia Robbins, another inmate of the cozy nest, were married atthe same place forty-eight years ago. It was noted that Henry Jeffery was thefather of the groom. The hour and time was propitious. The young folks “gotaway” without getting injured with four barrels of rice untouched, and itis said they went to Pike’s Peak, but the writer has had considerable doubtabout it for in less than a wek after their parting, they were spied inWaukesha, anxious to get back to home and mother.
We wish Harvey and Louise a great many joys, more than most people have, forthey occupy a valuable place in society in and around North Lisbon. They willlive on the old farm at North Lisbon. Waukesha Freeman, October 14, 1909.

Mrs. Emily Brown of Sussex passed away early Saturday morning at the home ofher son, Edgar Brown, in the village, aged 87 years. Mrs. Brown was a pioneerresident of Lisbon, her girlhood home being at North Lake (North Lisbon?). Shewas a sister of the late Addison Robbins of Waukesha. She married Edward Brownof Lisbon in her young womanhood, and two daughters and three sons were born tothem. But two sons remain of the family: Frank, of Waukesha, and Edgar ofSussex. Mr. Brown died many years ago. In spite of the infirmaties of age, Mrs.Brown was a bright and cheery woman and so enjoyed having her friends come tosee her. In accordance with her wish the casket was taken to the MethodistEpiscopal church on Monday, and remained there until the funeral servicesTuesday afternoon. Burial took place in rose Hill cemetery, Lisbon. WaukeshaDaily Freeman, April 18, 1928.

Everett Brown of Sussex Meets Death While on Fishing and Hunting Expedition
Everett Brown of Sussex was drowned in Lake Keesus, seven miles from his home, Sunday evening about six o’clock. The unfortunate man was subject to epilleptic fits and one came upon him while he was out alone in a boat. His two brother-in-laws, Walter Hardiman and Will Palin, of Milwaukee, who accompanied him on his hunting and fishing expedition, were on the shore, no more than 40 feet away, but when Brown fell from the boat into the water they were unable to render him any assistance. His body did not rise and was not found until the following morning, when it was taken from the water about nine o’clock. Seachers had been out all night. The water was quite deep at the point where the drowning occurred. Mr. Brown was married but had
no children.
Cornoner Hill, who was called in the case, will hold an inquest at Sussex this (thursday) morning at ten o’clock.

Mary Kerstein, 97, died Thursday. She was born in Menomonee Falls in November of 1904 to Nellie and Everett Gerken. Her birthday was the subject of some debate because she was born at midnight, just between Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. Her family decided to celebrate her birthday on Nov. 2.
In 1915 a young man named Rudy Kerstein started a job as a rural mail carrier for the Templeton Post Office, serving that small village, which is today the eastern part of Sussex. Mary Gerken was just 11 then. But after 11 years and a tour in World War I, Rudy Kerstein took her to be his wife. They were married for almost 62 years when he died in 1988.
Mary Gerken moved with her parents from Menomonee Falls to a farm on Good Hope Road when she was 4. In 1925, the family relocated to Main Street and occupied the home that is today Mindy’s Antiques. Mary lived there only one year before she married Rudy and moved about two blocks east, to a home across the street from Sussex Methodist Church, where Mary worshipped. She lived in that home for 75 years.
Her parents died just 30 days apart in 1930, leaving their home to Mary. She sold it to its most famous occupants, the Dr. Van Valin family. The Van Valins lived in the house for 60 years.
Mary never had children of her own, but took an active role in the lives of her brothers’ children. She is survived by five nieces and nephews.
