Madeline Halquist published two books: Our Family Tree: Halquist-Paulsen, Gelhar-Berndt and Halquist Stone Company, 1929-2004. In them she recorded these pithy Madeline originals:
I am a Republican, a Lutheran, an inner wheel, a bridge player and a golfer.
I married my high school sweetheart and was his Adams rib for almost 59 years, now cherishing the wonderful memories and love we shared.
I was a schoolteacher for four years, a housewife and mother, and toiled in the stone quarry for 31 years, not chipping on the rocks, but guarding the cash box.
My favorite hymn is How Great Thou Art.
My favorite TV programs are The MacNeil-Lehrer News Hour and Northern Exposure.
My favorite foods are roast duckling and Usingers mortadella.
My craft is needlepoint.
I try to read the Milwaukee Journal, the Fort Myers News Press in the winter, The Wall Street Journal, Time magazine and the Sussex Sun.
My greatest treasure is my family of four children and their spouses, the 12 grandchildren and the 23 great-grandchildren. This hopefully will increase.
I still firmly believe the Ten Commandments are just that commandments, and not 10 suggestions.

Madeline Emma Julia Halquist (nee Gelhar) passed away Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008, at 98 in her LindenGrove retirement home in Menomonee Falls.
It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Madeline Halquist, said Halquist Stone Co. Marketing Director Jeff Brown in an e-mail Friday. Madeline was a beloved woman who not only became the face of Halquist Stone Co. for nearly 40 years, but for many became the face of the community, as well. Her Midwestern charm and professional excellence captured the hearts of many, and the firm footprint she left behind will not easily fade away.
Madeline was the wife of Albin Stoney Halquist, whose father, John Halquist, founded Halquist Stone Co. in 1929. Her sons, Bud and Perry Halquist, became the third generation to take over the Lisbon-based company, and her grandchildren, Tom and Bill Halquist, are in charge today.
Madeline was born April 3, 1910, in Silver Lake in Waushara County to Edward and Wanda (nee Berndt) Gelhar. She attended Redgranite High School and Waushara County Normal School (teachers college) in Wautoma, plus summer school at Stevens Point Normal School.
She taught school for four years, first at Bannermau and then at Mt. Morris, both one-room schools with eight grades. She taught briefly at Coloma, where she handled just fourth and fifth grades.
The pay varied from $82.50 to $100 per month during her career. All her contracts included a marriage clause, nullifying her contract if she got married.
She met Al Halquist at Redgranite High School when he was a sophomore and she a freshman. They married nine years later on June 10, 1933, and remained together for the next 59 years,
The couple moved to Sussex not long after the wedding, living initially in a small cottage with no running water, next to Sussex Methodist Church.
They built a proper Sussex home in 1937, a large state-of-the-art Lannon-stone home for the family at present-day N64 W23494 Main St.
The construction cost them $7,000, of which $4,000 was financed by Sussex State Bank. The banker had a habit of walking past the house, Madeline often recounted. She always worried, she said, that he did so because he was about to foreclose on it.
The family sold the house for $26,000 in 1945 and moved to a house on Lisbon Road next to the companys main quarry, bringing Madeline into the family business guarding the cash box (as she put it) for the next 31 years. In 1966 they moved to Ada Court in nearby Menomonee Falls, close to Town Line Road and Silver Spring Drive.
Al and Madeline retired in 1976 to a winter condo in Fort Myers, Fla. They sold the Ada Court home in 1980 and bought a condo in Menomonee Falls for spring, summer and fall.
Al died June 4, 1992, at 81. Two months later, his 82-year-old widow wrote a 126-page book (with 200-plus pictures) detailing the history of the Gelhar/Halquist family. In 2005 she played a major part in writing a 101-page history of Halquist Stone Co. The Pauline Haass Public Library and the Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society keep publicly accessible copies of both books.
Lisbons Stoney Halquist Park, on the north side of Lisbon Road between Maple Avenue and Highway 74, is named after Al Halquist. And Sussex named its park on Waukesha Avenue (bisected by Elm Street) Madeline Park.
