Dana C. Ewell of Cincinnati recently called the Sussex Lisbon Area Historical Society to find out more about his great-great grandfather James Marvin Cady, a school-teacher who taught at the Sussex No. 10 School (Sussex Main Street School) during the early years of the Civil War.
Cady volunteered for the Union Army but didn’t make it back, leaving behind a young wife, Mary Ann Medhurst, and their daughter Margaret. Ewell, it turns out, is the Sussex teacher’s great-great grandson.
A special meeting was held November 27, 1849 to get the ball rolling on the new school. By June 1, 1850, the first Sussex school was built on a 50 by 100 foot lot donated by William Weaver, Jr. (1802-96). The original wooden school was built for $80, and in 1851 and additional $71 helped finish it. (The outdoor privie was a steal at $8.50).
The first school teacher, Janette Moyes, started at $1.25 per week in 1850, but her salary rose to $66 a year the next year. Cady took over as the Civil War began.
A huge pine pole was erected at Maple and Main to raise the flag and post war announcements. It flew at half-mast when Lisbon soldiers were reported killed or dead from disease. The pole remained viable until one dark and stormy night in the 1880s when it crashed to the ground. No one noticed the pole’s demise until the following morning.
Cady married Mary Ann Medhurst, from a prominent local family. She was soon pregnant and Cady paid a substitute to go into the Union Army for him.
After the child, Margaret Cady, was born May 20, 1862, he became more willing to serve. His chance came May 30, 1864, when he joined the 39th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment as a Private in Company I. He was sent to the Trans-Mississippi Army, which recognized his education and made him company clerk.
He caught one of the fevers of the day and was allowed to return to Sussex to recuperate for a month. Reporting back to St. Louis on his way home, he died August 31, 1864, and according to Ewell’s best guess, was buried there.
Now with a 2-year old daughter, Mary Ann Medhurst Cady, had some decisions to make. She turned the young girl over to her parents and went to work supporting herself.
William Weaver, who donated the lot for the original school, and his wife Mary Smith, built a home that still stands on what is now Cedar Circle.
The third of their children, John Rolfe, married Mary Boots, who left him with six children when she died. He married the somewhat younger widow Mary Ann Medhurst Cady soon afterward. The couple had four more girls: Alice, Carrie, Louella and Lettie (who died quickly). John Rolfe died at 72 in 1905 and is buried next to his first wife and little Lettie at St. Alban’s God’s Little Acre Cemetery.

EORGE MEDHURST:
A common occurrence at the North Western Sussex water stop, the swing arm would freeze in an ajar position. The next passing train, if it swayed too much, would hit the arm, sheering off the whole water faucet outlet and ground pipe. With no check valve on the water tower, the entire contents of the tank would spew out onto the tracks. Many times the water froze into solid masses that required the section crew (Frank Clarey and George Medhurst) to wield axes chopping up the ice.

The Lemon Family Tree on Ancestry.com gives Rufus the title “Colonel”. Rufus was a War of 1812 Captain in the New York Militia regiments of Adams’, then Davis’. Later he was a Major in McMahan’s Regiment.
From “Memoirs of Lenawee County, Michigan, Vol. 2. Biographical”:
Rufus M. Cady was a soldier in the War of 1812, having first been a captain in his regiment and later was promoted to colonel. In 1846 he and his family removed from New York to Menomonee Falls, Wis., where he bought a farm and resided until 1864, when the death of their son – a sacrifice to the preservation of our Union – broke up the home, after which the parents resided with our subject (Guy P. Fuller) and his wife (Sophia Cady) until their deaths, the father’s occurring about 1867 and the mother’s about 1876.
They were both valued members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Cady gave his allegiance to the Whig party, but changed to the Republican party upon its organization. He and his wife were the parents of six children.
