Mooney Family History
Descendants of Mary Mooney
Generation No. 1
1. M
ARY1 MOONEY was born in Ireland. She married JAMES O’RILEY. He was born Bef. 1811 in Dunshaughlin, Meath, Ireland, and died in Ireland.
Notes for J
AMES O’RILEY:
James, as an Irish Catholic, did not own any land, and Ireland’s plat records show James was a land tenant. All Irish ancestors in this family tree undoubtly were and always have been landless peasants, or they would never have immigrated to the United States. It would be difficult, if not impossible, to follow lineage with any degree of accuracy especially since scarcely a single record was kept at ports of embarkation In Ireland between 1845 to 1855. Source: Mary (Heindel) Reilly
——————-
One interesting thing I just discovered was that some of the Reilly clans supported King James II during the Jacobite War around 1688. James isn’t an Irish name, so I figure my James was in one of the clans that supported this English king against William the Orange, his competitor.
This link is very interesting to read http://www.doyle.com.au/jacobite_war.htm
When you read the War in Cavan, you can understand while a great number of Reilly’s fled to Co. Meath.
Child of M
ARY MOONEY and JAMES O’RILEY is:
2. i. PATRICK
2 RILEY, b. 31 Oct 1831, Dunshaughlin, Meath, Ireland; d. 08 Oct 1888, V9P611, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Generation No. 2
2. P
ATRICK2 RILEY (MARY1 MOONEY) was born 31 Oct 1831 in Dunshaughlin, Meath, Ireland, and died 08 Oct 1888 in V9P611, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married (1) ELLEN(MARY) MALONE (Source: 1860 Federal Census, Census lists her as “Ellen Riley”, Milwaukee, #rd Ward, page 35, 203-196.) 1854 in New York, New York, daughter of MICHAEL MALONE and ANNE?. She was born Abt. 1836 in Ireland, and died Bet. 1863 – 1867 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married (2) BRIDGET”BIDDY” CONNELL 17 Nov 1867 in St. Gaul’s Church, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Source: Milw Co. V3-p82. (Source: Wisconsin Marriages, pre-1907, Milwaukee County, Vol 5 Page 315, lists groom as Patrick Reiley.), daughter of JAMES CONNELL and MARGARET SCULLY. She was born 1840 in Ireland (Source: 1880 Federal Census, 1880 Census lists her as 40 yrs old (born 1840); the 1870 as 35 yrs (born 1835); and her burial record at Calvary says she died 1916 at age 72 or born abt 1844.), and died 04 May 1916 in Milw. Co. V381-p229, Milwaukee, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
Notes for P
ATRICK RILEY:
Patrick’s and Bridget’s Registration of Marriage gave his name as Patrick “Reily” (See Bridget’s Notes – Reiley), son of James Reily and Mary Moony, laborer in Milwaukee, born in County of Mead (Meath), Ireland.
1858-59 and 1859-60 Milwaukee City Directories also list another Patrick Reilly, 3rd and Clybourn, boilermaker; and then as Patrick Riley, boilermaker, hnc Third and Fowler. Our Patrick is also listed but reverse surname order, as a laborer, different address.
1860 Milwaukee 3rd Ward, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
Patrick Riley, 29
Ellen, 24, Ireland
James, 6, New york
Thomas, 3, Wisconsin
William, 2, Wisconsin
living with
Edward Murphy, 38, Ireland
Maria, 28, Ireland
Mary Ann, 8, Louisiana
Thomas, 4, Wisconsin
Ellen. 2, Wisconsin
and Ellen Burns, 22, Ireland
The Murphys had to come to Milwaukee via New Orleans. It possible to speculate some relationship between the two families. They both have sons named Thomas, about a year apart in age, both born in Wisconsin. The Murphy’s have a daughter named Ellen, but could be named aftrer the Ellen Burns, age 22, living with them; possible sister to Maria? But the Murphys left New York (if they were even there) before the Rileys had their son James.
Two doors(?) over is Michael Malone, 45, Ireland
Anne, 40, Ireland,
James, 18, carpenter, Wisconsin
Mary, 16, Canada
Margaret, 14, Wisconsin
John. 11,
Michael, 9,
Annie, 7,
William, 5,
Martin, 3,
So the family came to Canada abt 1843, then on to Wisconsin abt 1845.
So is Ellen a Malone, and if so, the daughter? She could be by age, and place of birth. But Michael and his family were in Wisconsin before Patrick Riley married Ellen in New York by about 9 yrs.
Alternate: Irish Immigrants: New York Port Arrival Records, 1846-1851 Record
Name: O’Reilly, Patrick Age: 20 Gender: Male Embarkation: Liverpool
Ship: ColomboOccupation: workman/woman Passengers: 165 Residence: Unknown
Native Country: Ireland Destination: New Haven, Connecticut (?) Arrival
Date: 1 August 1851
——————————
Could this be Patrick O’Riley’s kin, his father/mother? No mention was ever given that they immigrated to America. There is a story of William Patrick Reilly, I, having an Uncle John/Jerry? The John below would be a great uncle. Probably not, since Mary (probably the same person in 1860 and 1870) would have been only abt 11 yrs old when Patrick was born.
It’s interesting to note that a number of 1860 Reillys happened to arrive in Milwaukee around 1856, from New York, Massachusetts, and Connecticut, plus a new couple arrival (?) from Ireland. With children either just born or recently in the state they came from or the Irish couople who had their first(?) child in Wisconsin then.
In 1860 Milwaukee Ward 4 was the only one (or its census taker) to include further place of birth info, such as the county in Ireland, or England.
1860 Milwaukee Ward 4
James Riley, 55, 1804, Meath, Ireland
Mary, 40, 1819, Meath, Ireland
John, 15, 1844, Ireland
Richard, 13, 1846, Ireland
James, 11, 1848, Ireland
Same persons as in 1860?
1870 Milwaukee Ward 4
James Reiley, 60, abt 1810, laborer, all Ireland born
Mary, 49, abt 1821 (This wouldn’t match for Patrick’s mother, but the 1809 age does.)
John, 20, butcher
Everyone listed above is six years younger, except Mary, 12 years.
No Richard Riley in 1870 Milwaukee County; though there are several possibles, one in Chicago, one in Missouri, and two in New York.
James Riley, age 23, 1847, Ireland, Milwaukee Ward 5, he’s an apprentice in a boiler shop.
