100 years ago – 1908

Eighty acres in Brookfield was announced as having sold for $7,500.

The City of Waukesha voted 6-5 in favor of closing taverns and other places where spirits are offered on Sundays.

Prohibition was a very strong force in Lisbon.

50 years ago – 1958

Sussex Main Street School students were again treated to the annual Milwaukee Shrine Circus performance arranged by George Podolske.

The Sussex Teen Haven Club sponsored a dance with the Top Hat Orchestra.

Lannon Boy Scout Troop 62, sponsored by the Lannon VFW, had 20 members as it reorganized for the Scouting year to come.

25 years ago – 1983

Quad/Graphics suspended work on its new Sussex plant as a result of harassment by Pewaukee residents at its Duplainville plant.

The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department opened a substation in the former Orchard Drive School, which had been abandoned in 1978.

Drew’s Variety Store in Sussex was bought out by Schultz Bros.

Sussex on the Main put up a new sign.

10 years ago – 1998

The Town of Lisbon failed to find anyone to fill the treasurer post vacated by Mary Lueck in December.

Amanda Schuldt was the longtime “Hamilton Highlights” correspondent for the Sussex Sun.

5 years ago – 2003

Marjorie Rankin and Kenneth Schlei, both lifelong local residents of Sussex-Lisbon, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 6.

The Sussex Area Chamber of Commerce donated $13,515 to help the Sussex Fire Department buy a thermal imaging camera.

100 years ago – 1908
Patrick McCartin of Lake Five died of consumption at age 48. He was a widower and left no children.
Lisbon pioneer George Greengo died at his North Lisbon home Feb. 11 at age 75. He was buried at St. Alban’s.
Another Lisbon pioneer, Margaret Craven, died at age 93. Born in Scotland, she moved to Lisbon in 1841 and married Richard Craven in 1844.
50 years ago – 1958
Chester Lingelbach and Eugene Belongia were elected replacement officers of Sussex Methodist Church.
Ham cost 49 cents a pound, and small shrimp sold for 79 cents a pound.
The Sussex Teen Haven Club dance at the Sussex Community Hall drew 200 people.
Lisbon-born Ida Edwards, 90, died. She started teaching at local grade schools, then at Waukesha High School. She was raised in what is now Eagles Ridge West.
25 years ago – 1983
Hamilton’s star end Mark Ernwein was named to the Shrine all-star football team.
Hamilton’s wrestlers won the Braveland Conference championship under coach Don Longdin.
The Sussex Village Board considered denying Michael Mueller the dance hall license he sought for his Skeet Weeds Saloon in the old Brook Hotel.
10 years ago – 1998
Former Lisbon Supervisor and Town Chairman Don Holt was recovering from brain tumor surgery.
Lisbon Town Clerk Lauren Pomeroy suddenly resigned, the town’s fourth resignation in five months.
Sussex Sun editor Erin Mellone was promoted to a new position, news editor of Lake Country Publications, leaving the Sussex Sun to look for a new editor.
5 years ago – 2003
The Sussex Community Center hired a professional fundraiser to raise money for a community swimming pool and extensive recreation improvements.
The Village of Sussex took a serious look at adding a disc golf course to Sussex Village Park.

100 years ago – 1908
The Rev. William Lemon of Waukesha died of spinal meningitis at age 57. He was married to a great-granddaughter of Sussex millionaire Richard Weaver, Nellie Topping. He was buried in the Weaver family plot in St. Alban’s God’s Acre Cemetery.
50 years ago – 1958
Sussex annexed 20 acres of the Bob Stier farm on Maple Avenue south of the Bug Line Railroad tracks from Lisbon.
Lisbon residents Mrs. George DeCaluwe and Walter Palm appeared recently on a TV contest on WISN-TV.
Members of the Sussex Main Street School undefeated eighth-grade boys basketball team are George Clarey, Henry Stillman, Ken Preuss, Bob Ishe, Phil Teetz, Terry Lutz, John Stier, Tom Takaces, Ron Fisher, David Gullickson and Tom Medley.
25 years ago – 1983
The sixth annual VFW State Tiddly Winks Tournament hosted 54 teams.
Former Sussex Village President, Fire Chief and Lions Club charter member Roy Stier died Feb. 21.
The Hamilton Athletic Booster Club produced thousands of pizzas for a fundraiser (chaired by Marine Heliski) to support athletics at Hamilton High.
10 years ago – 1998
The Lisbon Town Board voted 3-1 to keep its police force and not switch to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.
Mike Sherman, Tony Graziano and John Plese won Greater Metro Conference wrestling titles for Hamilton High School.
5 years ago – 2003
Janet Curtis was named Sussex Fire Department Firefighter of the Year.
A shoplifter stole lobster, shrimp and steaks from the Sussex Pick ‘n Save.
Lester Clarey of Sussex died at 102. He had worked for Mammoth Spring Canning Co. in Sussex for 49 years.

100 years ago – 1908
Erna Reder and William Schlei were married late last month at the bride’s home in North Lisbon. She wore a gown of fine blue silk.
The Bug Line Railroad Depot agents discontinued telephone messages from their depots.
50 years ago – 1958
John and Minnie Halquist of Lisbon and Florida celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their children, Alvin, Thelma, Lorraine and Ronnie.
Sussex-Lisbon was hit by an outbreak of measles.
25 years ago – 1983
The seventh- and eighth-grade boys basketball teams at Templeton Middle School are 25-1 under coaches Randy Howard and Randy Koller, respectively.
Glen Moody was eliminated from the Sussex village presidential race in a primary. Winners Paul Fleischmann and John Tews will face each other in April – the third time in eight years the two have faced off.
Two Hamilton wrestlers made state: Todd Wandsnider and Brian John.
10 years ago – 1998
Lisbon Town Clerk Lauren Pomeroy, who beat longtime Clerk Betty Fryda last April, resigned because, she said, she received no respect from some town supervisors and employees. She added that “Lisbon definitely needs a town administrator.”
Lannon named Ron Nellis its new fire chief.
5 years ago – 2003
Lifelong Lisbon resident Ruth Stier (nee Seaborn) died at age 84. She was a longtime Red Cross volunteer and officer of the Sussex VFW auxiliary.
Junior Josh Pinter was the only Hamilton wrestler to make the state tournament.
