The oyster super at the Sussex Methodist Church on New Year’’s Eve was attended and a big success. Sussex resident Claude Greengo came home for the holidays from Detroit Medical College. Charlie and Earnest Weaver returned to Beloit College after the holidays. John R. Small was the representative from Sussex at the state convention of Modern Woodman (insurance society).

50 years ago this week

Mr. and Mrs. John Mudlitz ofMain Street, Sussex, received the news that their son Raymond had been killed in action in Germany. He was a member of the First Army inBelgium.Because of the sudden resignation of teacher Delores Raymond at Sixteen School the one-room school was closed and the students were transferred to Sussex Main Street School.After an oyster supper New Year’s Eve, Paul Braeger, Harcourt Weaver, Walter Hardiman and Claude Kaderabek came to Sussex at midnight and woke up the village by ringingSt. Alban’s Church bells. Some people said it was the oysters and others said it was the liquid used to wash down the oysters.Will McKerrow was the leader of a Lisbon United PresbyterianYoung People’s meeting just after New Year’s Day.

A bucket of 21 pieces of Kentucky Fried Chicken cost $4.50 on New Year’s day.The Hamilton faculty basketball team, led by Guy Vance’s 25 points and Stan Grove’s 11, lost to the Hamilton alumni, 50-46.

Psychological tests will be given to kidnaper Thomas Opachen.Paul Fleischmann filed papers to run against incumbent Sussex president John Tews.Donald Eggum announced he was leaving the county coroner post.Dan Heckman was chosen all-tournament at the Hamilton Holiday basketball tournament.There was 20 inches of snow in December, 1984. Thirteen inches fell on Dec. 25 and 26, with Dec. 28 temperatures going up to 65 degrees.

Gordon Heller,Templeton Middle School principal for 20 years, announced his retirement, effective at the end of the school year.1990 marked the 100th anniversary of the naming of Lannon. It was Hadfield and Stone City.

The Sussex Dancing Club enjoyed a party at the Lisbon Town Hall (today Sussex Family Practice) on New Year’’s Eve. Miss Cora Templeton had a party for her friends at her Templeton home (where Hardee’s is today).James Templeton was elected sheriff of Waukesha County. His son Andrew will serve as undersheriff. James Templeton will move from his home on Waukesha Avenue to the Waukesha County jail house where he will live. He expects to sell his store in Templeton but will continue to own his grain elevator on the Wisconsin Central Railroad side track.

50 years ago this week

The North Lisbon School will have a parent-teacher meeting.Royal Woodchick of Sussex has graduated from Flight Officer School in Texas and is now an Army Air Force pilot.

25 years ago this week

Hamilton seniors were exempt from the final exam if they maintain a B average or better in class.The Sussex-Lisbon Jaycees held a Christmas tree pickup on Jan. 11 with a mass burning on Jan. 12.

10 years ago this week

Marie DeVillers was taken off the Lisbon ballot for clerk after her nomination papers were one short of the required 20 valid signatures.Charles Schuldt filed to battle Michael Ertl for Lisbon’s No. 2 supervisor post. Gus Sandroni filed against Richard Titus for the No. 4 supervisor post.John Zebell, Sun Editor, started writing a column titled, “For Whom Zebell Tolls.”Terry Zignego is the Sussex librarian.

Longtime Hamilton school board members Carolyn Limjoco and Nancy Mansavage decide not to seek re-election.Lisbon and town chairman Don Holt reopened consolidation talks with the Village of Sussex.

100 years ago this week Roderick Ainsworth was the Lisbon representative on the Waukesha County Board. Barker’s Band furnished the music at the second monthly Sussex Dance Club meeting at the Lisbon Town Hall. M.H. Pendergast was hired by the Champeny Creamery.

The Town of Lisbon scraped together five barrels of used clothing to send to the suffering people of Nebraska.

50 years ago this week

The Willow Spring School 4-H Club was headed by president Barbara Barrett and vice president Melvin Metzger.Mrs. John Magnusson, East Main Street, Sussex, was informed that her son, Capt. Sven Magnusson, had been captured by the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge.The Sussex High School boys and girls alumni teams defeated the ninth and 10th grade teams at the Sussex Community Hall gym.Ralph Clarey was serving in the Merchant Marines.

25 years ago this date

The Sussex Lions and Lionettes conducted a mass blood drive for two Sussex residents – trustee Robert Mayer, who had a kidney transplant, and A.C. “Bud” Halquist, who was set to undergo open heart surgery.The Sussex assessor was Eugene Kersten.A part-time deputy police officer, Dale Schickowski, was hired for Sussex. His pay was $3.50 per hour. (He lasted only a short time.)

Lisbon chairman Don R. Holt’s signature on his nomination papers wa questioned.Deborah Schultz again made a run for the Lannon Village Board.Twenty-eight inches of snow fell since Christmas.Tom Tradewell received the Award of Merit from Northeast District (Boy) Scouting.Richard Klug, F&M Bank, came to the village to give awards to Sussex bank employees.

Lisbon studied future sewer needs.Flu hit the high school hard during exam week.Al Perkins, outgoing president of the Sussex-Lisbon Business and Professional Association, was honored.Sussex Lioness Club, with Pat Stoffel president, celebrated its 25th anniversary.

James Butler has been reported on the sick list in late January. (Butler recovered and on July 5, 1897, murdered his wife by hacking her to death with an ax).Lisbon resident Jerry Smith (since 1849) complained that there were no squirrels or rabbits for hunting. Especially rare which are hunted from their burrows by the use of ferret, called “Nasskittel,” locally.

50 years ago this week

Wilfred Mamerow of Sussex made the Land O’Lakes All-Star basketball team which will oppose the Oshkosh All-Stars at the Menomonee Falls High School gym. The Oshkosh All-Stars were the World’s Basketball (professional) champions in 1941 and ’42.

25 years ago this week

George Anderson was the president of the Hamilton School Board.The Sussex village board started meeting twice a month as the village is growing at a fantastic rate.The officers of the Lannon Fire Department are chief Keith Gissal, assistant chiefs Syd Gissal and Godfrey (Shupe) DeCristofaro, captains Walter Becker and Harvey Rossman and lieutenants Robert Monacelli and LaVerne Ehley.Templeton Middle School will have its official dedication ceremony as it is in its first year of existence.

A low temperature of minus-27 degrees was recorded at the Sussex Wastewater Treatment Plant on Jan. 20.Robert Ische of Lannon took over Zimmermann’s Corner, renaming it “Dilly’s.”Hamilton committed to move to the eight-team all-Waukesha County Braveland in September 1985.

Lisbon Plank one-room school began planning an all-school reunion.Area prepared for the U.S. census.Merger study between Lisbon and Sussex was killed.Final stages of remodeling of the old Main Street School for the new Sussex Village Hall were taking place.

The Templeton Quarry Co. had nearly completed its lime kilns and they were expected to be in operation by March 1. Today this I the location of Friday Canning Co. Oren Smith & Company took over the store lately occupied by James Templeton. Winter storms interfered with the delivery of milk to the Champeny Creamery (today on Maple and Champeny Drive).

50 years ago this week

The local Sussex southern division LOL team was called the “Sussex Canners” as they were funded by the Mammoth Spring Canning Co.A fire destroyed a 36-by-80-foot farm building at the McKerrow farms. One hundred sheep were lost.

25 years ago this week

Templeton Middle School had an enrollment of 890 sixth, seventh, and eigth graders. The TMS staff included 57.The state-ranked Hamilton wrestling team was 10-1 for the season.Three Hamilton students, Dorothy Oster, Bruce Beuchel and Dean Stone, along with alternate Henry Hecker, appeared on the TV panel show “Who Knows.”

Over 40 inches of snow fell after Christmas.The Waukesha district attorney cleared Don Holt and Betty Fryda of alleged forgery on Lisbon nomination papers. Holt said that his signature is his signature and not someone else writing in it.The Sussex village board approved five as fire inspectors: Tim Hartman, Tom Schlei, Gabe Kolesari, Jake White and Corky Curtis.

Keith Wunrow, veteran Hamilton assistant superintendent, announced plans to retire at the end of the school year.A blizzard dumped eight inches of snow in the area.Sussex village employees voted 6-1 to join a union.Aces II Rock Shop opened in Sussex.Realignment was in the works for Hamilton’s athletic program.
