100 years ago – Oct. 6, 1910
At the beginning of the year 1910, the chairman of the Town of Lisbon was Henry Rhineford, the first Lisbon chairman to be of German extraction. At the April election he was replaced by an icon of town history, William “Will” H. Edwards who would serve over 30 years in the state legislature maintaining a home in downtown Sussex.
50 years ago – Oct. 6, 1960
Jerry Herzog and his wife Dorothy have moved from Sussex Main Street to Tomah where they have purchased a motel. Mr. Herzog is the former President of the Sussex Lions Club.
St. John’s of Lannon celebrated its 65th anniversary (began in 1895) with several original members attending the event.
25 years ago – Oct. 6, 1985
The Sussex Lions Club was awarded a plaque by the administration of Hamilton for the club spending $70,000 for the lighting system at the high school football stadium. President Glenn Moody at a halftime ceremony received the plaque for the Lion’s donation.
10 years ago – Oct. 6, 2000
The St. John Lutheran Lannon Church has topped out and is expected to be finished by Easter 2001.
It is expected, according to Hamilton Education Foundation member Kathy Pollow Daniels, that this year’s Dozer Days will raise $125,000.
Culvers ice cream held a groundbreaking ceremony in Sussex.
Five years ago – Oct. 6, 2005
Eagle Scout candidate Erin Riter, 14, had a project to install a decorative iron fence at the new Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society Museum.
100 years ago – Oct. 13, 1910
The latest rage is “Lemon Soda.”
The Women’s Christian Temperance Union is a local organization trying to outlaw alcoholic drinks. Every community has an active chapter.
50 years ago – Oct. 13, 1960
Eight Dutch Elm diseased trees have been confirmed in Menomonee Falls.
The Lannon Home and School has purchased a piano for the grade school.
The outgoing principal of Willow Springs School is Stuart Grule while the incoming principal is Thomas K. Kircher.
Sliced bacon is advertised at two pounds for 99 cents.
25 years ago – Oct. 13, 1985
Two Sussex trustees, Dave Granlund and Sal Maglio, have been hospitalized for respiratory problems.
Dick and Karen Wnuk had 100 guests at their 25th wedding anniversary. They were married at St. James Oct. 4, 1960.
Kim Roskopf is a key player on the first place Hamilton girls volleyball team.
10 years ago – Oct. 13, 2000
A 195-foot-high cell phone tower at Lied’s Nursery has been nixed by the Town of Lisbon.
At the Hamilton Homecoming pep rally, the Milwaukee Brewers racing sausages made an appearance. The king and queen of homecoming were Kelly Schweiger and Chris Lauderback.
Five years ago – Oct. 13, 2005
The Hamilton football team beat West Allis Hale 30-20 in the homecoming game. It wasn’t that close as the Charger team gave up an 83-yard Hale touchdown pass with 24 seconds left in the game. The odd part about the game was Jeremy Duell scored all 30 points or four touchdowns, three extra points and a field goal. Scott Rolfs started for Hamilton defense.

100 years ago – Oct. 20, 1910
The “New” Farmers and Merchants Bank, which opened in Menomonee Falls June 25, 1908, has assets of $200,171.22. In 1938, they would take over the Sussex State Bank and eventually open up branches in Lake Five and Lannon. In the early 1900s, these banks would be taken over by the current owner, Associated Bank.
50 years ago – Oct. 20, 1960
You can have 5 yards screened, fertile top soil delivered to your Sussex address for $13.50.
Instead of replacing license plates, or issuing new metal new date attachments in the future, the state will send out reflecting, gummed stickers starting in 1962.
Sussex hot school lunches cost 25 cents each.
25 years ago – Oct. 20, 1985
On the cliff of gravel at Dawson Lannon Stone Products gravel pit someone has painted a massive “WHY” that onlookers can see from nearby Highway 74.
Ken Ohrmundt has resigned as the Hamilton Athletic Director, but will continue as a teacher.
He is an original Hamilton teacher going back to September of 1962.
10 years ago – Oct. 20, 2000
Mapleway Park is receiving a $20,000 upgrade in its playground equipment.
Betty Mindemann has purchased the bankrupt “A Taste of Gourmet” home also known as the Van Valin home at a sheriff’s sale for $157,000. She plans to remodel it into an antique shop and home for herself.
Five years ago – Oct. 20, 2005
The quarterback for the Hamilton football team is Paul Coburn, who also plays basketball.
A union giveback fails to end the Halquist Stone Co. strike as many of the workers involved are coming back to work accepting the company’s health and retirement proposals which they deem better than what the union offers.
