50 years ago – March 2, 1961
The Town of Lisbon had a primary in February as seven filed papers for two Lisbon supervisor seats. They were: Harry Bartlett, Oscar Ward, Robert Smocke, Ervin Schuldt, Will Gensrick, Harry Dopke and Milo Cooling.
A pound of potato chips is 49 cents. Hills Bros. Coffee comes in 2-pound cans for $1.37.
In Sussex, three men are running for the Waukesha County Board seat: Charles Busse, Roy Stier and John Karner.
25 years ago – March 2, 1986
Tom Konkol will be the new soccer coach at Hamilton.
Jane Stadler and Chuck Schult were elected in a Town of Lisbon primary election and will advance to the April election.
Betty Mindemann is the director of the Sussex Food Pantry that was initiated by the Cooperating Churches of Sussex.
10 years ago – March 2, 2001
The Village of Sussex hired its very first fulltime fire fighter, Julie Boglitsch.
The Sussex Land O’Lakes Baseball Club will have to find a new location or abandon the construction of an electronic score board for hardball diamond in Village Park. It is too close to the park border and a nearby subdivision.
Hamilton students are building a home in Centennial Oaks subdivision as part of a class project. Once it’s complete, it will be sold to possibly fund more innovative classes.
Five years ago – March 2, 2006
Sussex firefighter-EMT Julie Boglitschwas picked by her peers as the Sussex Firefighter of the year.
Hamilton principal David Furrer will resign at the end of the school year after 12 years.
Terry Youngbauer, Hamilton High School class of 1979, has been selected to the Drake University Century Basketball Team.

100 years ago – March 9, 1911
By March 1, Lisbon farmers wanted to have their hired man lined up for the coming farming year. It was a common saying that, “The hunting season for a hire man lasts until March 1st.” It was added that the hunters (farmers) did not need a license, but rather a fat bank account and a good reputation. There was also an admonishment to “raise your own help.”
50 years ago – March 9, 1961
Ron Evert, Ken Kersten and Bill Evert will represent Sussex in the annual Land O’s All Star basketball game that will be played in Arrowhead High School’s new gym (future north campus).
Ten ruby red grapefruit cost 39 cents.
The Sussex Fire Department was called to a chimney fire at Lisbon farmer Max Horawtich’s home.
25 years ago – March 9, 1986
The 1986 officers of the Sussex Lisbon Business and Professional Association are President Bill Daley, Vice President Guy Straz, Secretary Lynn Zindl and Treasurer Dennis Post.
Jim Virano is the spelling champ at Templeton Middle School.
10 years ago – March 9, 2001
Recent snowstorms have caused ceiling damage in the Pauline Haass Public Library roof.
Five years ago – March 9, 2006
Hamilton wrestler Max Pascale represented the school at the state WIAA tournament.
Frequent coyote sightings have been reported in Sussex and Lisbon.
The downsizing of the Waukesha County Board is being considered.
An ad in the Sussex Sun advertises an interest rate of 5.30 percent on a 12-month bank CD.

100 years ago – March 16, 1911
The Wisconsin State Teachers Association is pushing a bill that will provide pensions for Wisconsin school teachers once they reach retirement age and have taught in the district for a certain number of years. A similar bill passed two years ago but was vetoed by Governor Davidson. Now Senator Hoyt of Menomonee Falls is re-introducing the bill.
50 years ago – March 16, 1961
Norman Fries, the administrator of the proposed Hamilton High School, presented to the public final designs of the high school. It is slated to open in September of 1962 with 290 freshman and sophomores and then grow into a four-year high school. Fries said he expects an initial 48 teachers, administrators, clerical and maintenance employees.
An 11-inch snowfall buried Sussex-Lisbon in mid-March.
25 years ago – March 16, 1986
The Lighthouse Baptist Church is using the former Orchard Drive School cafeteria for church services with Rev. Bruce Clark as the founding leader.
The seventh-grade Templeton Boys basketball team had a perfect record winning 16 games. The team was coached by Ron Radmer.
The Hamilton varsity boys basketball team won its 10th WIAA Regional Tournament in 13 years as they beat West Bend 75-66 in the championship.
10 years ago – March 16, 2001
Sussex area 33rd Senate District representative Margaret Farrow is slated to become the Lt. Governor of Wisconsin by appointment from Gov. Scott McCallum.
Five years ago – March 16, 2006
Soccer Wave Coach Keith Tozer was a special guest at the Sussex Spring Fest.
George Kraemer and his wife Nancy were special visitors at the Sussex Lisbon Area Historical Society. Kraemer of West Bend is a member of the Sussex Baseball Hall of Fame. He played for the 1950 undefeated Land O’ Rivers grand championship team.

100 years ago – March 23, 1911

The coroner’s jury of Waukesha came to Menomonee Falls to convene over the recent death of William Busse in North Lake. Busse was walking east to Templeton and a train hit him from behind as he did not heed the train whistle.

The testimony of the engineer was Busse must have heard the whistle but ignored it.

Herman Harmon of Lannon died on his Good Hope Road farm. He was considered the oldest man in Lannon.

50 years ago – March 23, 1961

The Lannon Nike site will close this summer. The site is manned by C Battery, 3rd Battalion, 59th Artillery.

Lannon Village President Frances Clucas is retiring. Trustees Richard Torstenson and Elmer Weyer are running in the April election to replace him.

Norma Schlie and Mary Treloar were elected president and vice president respectively of the Sussex VFW Auxiliary.

25 years ago – March 23, 1986

A stolen car crashed into the basement of Willow Spring School.

Hamilton 1979 graduate Terry Youngbauer has been named assistant coach at Drake University and 1984 graduate Cary Vance is the manager of the Marquette University boys basketball team.

Lisbon residents Jo Mason and Joe Marchese are running for Waukesha County Board of Supervisors.

10 years ago – March 23, 2001

Sussex community leader and lifetime village resident Ray Semrow died at age 89.

Five years ago – March 23, 2006

Ruth Lembke’s 75-acre farm will not go to the Town of Lisbon as the owner was dissatisfied with how her friend Pauline Haass’ will to the town was handled. Lembke’s will, drawn up 10 years ago, was changed just a month before her March 3 death.

100 years ago – March 30, 1911

Waukesha County Deputy Sheriff Jack Sullivan was in Lannon to serve papers on a Stone City father for charges of assaulting his own son.

A special train of inspectors from Chicago passed through Lannon, Lisbon and North Lake to inspect the Bug Line tracks.

Lannon grade school has 140 students while St. John’s Lutheran has 70.

In other Lannon news, Paul Froeming is building an ice house so he can serve Lannon-area ice boxes with crystal clear ice.

50 years ago – March 30, 1961

In the upcoming election in Sussex, John C. Karner is contesting Roy Stier for village president. Running for three trustee seats are Ed Kraft, Orville Cullen, Roy Evert. In Lisbon Art Manke is opposing incumbent Town Chairman Paul Pichler.

Ham costs 39 cents per pound.

25 years ago – March 30, 1986

Shelly Prosek shatters the Hamilton girls shot put record with a 38-foot, 8 ½-inch effort at the Racine indoor meet. The former record was held by Peggy Schieffer set in 1983.

Four are running for three trustee positions on the Lannon Village Board: Debra Schultz, Ward Kunz, Don Weiland and Fred “Fritz” Miller.

10 years ago – March 30, 2001

The initial readings of the 2000 U.S. Census show Sussex with a population of 8,828; Lannon has 1,009.

Jodi Wesneski is named Sussex Fire Department Firefighter of Year.

The Sussex Lions have donated $7,000 to the construction of facilities at Armory Park.

The Village of Sussex is contemplating beginning a comprehensive recreation program.

Five years ago – March 30, 2006

Dennis Plotecher and Ron Fricke are vying for a Lisbon town board seat.

The Lila Busse Graser Chapter 159 Order of the Eastern Star is celebrating its 100th anniversary.

Gladys Moran, 103, a former teacher at Hamilton High School died.
