100 years ago – May 4, 1911
The Lannon estate of Thomas McCartney and Heman Harmon have been offered for probate. McCartney was the executor of Marmon’s will and has died; a new one will have to be found.
50 years ago – May 4, 1961
William Dopke died at age 61. He was the maintenance man at Mammoth Spring Canning Company for 30 years as well as a Sussex fireman for many years.
25 years ago – May 4, 1986
Fifth-graders will attend Templeton Middle School next year.
Peter and “Mrs. B” Bernhart celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary.
Lester “Buck” Reimer of Lannon has been added to the Land O’ Lakes Baseball Hall of Fame.
Frank Drahos of Sussex harvested a 25-pound wild turkey near Boscobel.
The Lighthouse Baptist Church is thinking of building in Lisbon on Howard Lane.
10 years ago – May 4, 2001
The Sussex Village Park baseball diamond concession stand will be demolished after being damaged by a fire. A new one will be built.
Andrea Ziebell set a Hamilton girls school record in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 1:53.7. Kelly Johnson set a record in the 1600 meter with a time of 5:25.9. She also broke the school record in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:39.1.
Five years ago – May 4, 2006
Quad/Graphics will appoint Joel Quadracci as its President and Chief Executive Officer replacing Thomas Quadracci.
The Hamilton Charger girls softball team is 5-1 with Katherine Mess pitching. Jim Lawinger has been the girls fast-picth softball coach since the 1970s.

100 years ago – May 11, 1911
The ground above the most recent burial at the cemetery off Maple Avenue is sinking.
50 years ago – May 11, 1961
The Sussex Area Band held a concert at the new Maple Avenue School gym. Admission was 50 cents. Members of the band were from Maple Avenue, Willow Springs and Lannon schools with Roger McGill directing.
The Lannon VFW will hold a marbles tournament on May 13 for Lannon school children. Trophies and prizes will be awarded.
25 years ago – May 11, 1986
Anita Weir, who began teaching in the Hamilton School District in 1962, was given the Wisconsin Business Education Association Outstanding Secondary Business Educator award. George Szygielski and Kathie Sommers were honored as outstanding library volunteers.
10 years ago – May 11, 2001
Hamilton’s Jenny Prochazka is the two-time defending state champion in shot put. A new event in girls high school track this year is the pole vault.
The Sierra Club and the Citizens for a Better Environment are against the widening of Highway 164.
The Village of Sussex has hired a consultant to help the village refine its community center and explore fundraising.
Five years ago – May 11, 2006
The Village of Sussex will buy two derelict Main Street homes, the so-called Pink Palace and the former Kaderabek home for a total of $456,000. They will be razed and the sites seeded until a new use or owner comes forward.

100 years ago – May 18, 1911
Lannonite Thomas Walsh, born in 1825, has died at age 85 on May 20.
Clark University is offering a $100 award to any Wisconsinite who sights a passenger pigeon and notifies the university of its whereabouts. It has been 40 years since a million of the birds were used in the U.S., but it is now feared they are extinct.
50 years ago – May 18, 1961
St. James Catholic Church is building a new sanctuary that will seat 600. Meanwhile six classrooms are being added to the St. James grade school. Rev. Francis A. Finnegan is the past of the church that organized in 1846.
Keith Gissal is the Lannon Civil Defense Director.
The Sussex Lions Club will hold its annual May Day dance at the Sussex Community Hall.
Elaine Podolske and Phyllis Stier received $10 scholarships to attend Camp Webb summer camp.
25 years ago – May 18, 1986
Thirteen-year Hamilton Athletic Director Ken Ohrmunt has retired and Jerry Key of Barneveld will replace him.
The Hamilton junior prom will be held at Marchese’s Danceland. Prom Queen is Beth Kraeft and King is Dan Heckman.
Because of declining enrollment, eight Hamilton School District teachers were laid off which includes 6 ½ at the high school.
10 years ago – May 18, 2001
Vandals threw rocks through eight windows at Hamilton High School on a Sunday night.
The decision to move longtime Hamilton band director Karen Moniza from the high school to Templeton Middle School has upset some parents and members of the band.
After winning the Metro Conference track and field relays, the girls track team won the New Berlin Eisenhower. The coach is Jerry Wetherall.
Five years ago – May 18, 2006
Ian Hansen of Lisbon has earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Highway 164 is being widened from Sussex Main Street to Howard Lane in Lisbon. Michael Reed has resigned from the Lisbon Plan Commission in protest of the project.
The Sussex Fire Department has raised its ambulance fee for Sussex residents from $300 to $400.

100 years ago – May 25, 1911

In the Milwaukee Commission row the buying prices are: eggs, 11-12 cents a dozen, potatoes, 48 to 52 cents a bushel, cattle $3.50 to $5 per 100 weight, corn, 53 cents bushel, butter, 18 to 22 cents per pound, hard wheat $1 per bushel and oats, 30 cents a bushel.

The State Legislator voted on a bill relating to using dynamite or other explosives to blow up a property. The maximum penalty is 15 years in prison.

50 years ago – May 25, 1961

The annual May crowning at St. James Catholic Church had Luthanne Becker as the honoree do the crowning. The attendants were Nancy Priestly, Dianne Friess, Rosemary Samanske and Rosemary Goetz.

Mr. and Mrs. Westly Rankin celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Milton Mantz is an executive at Mammoth Spring Canning Co. but he also moonlights as the Sussex agent for Farmers Mutual American Family Insurance Co.

25 years ago – May 25, 1986

Quad/Graphics is embarking on its third expansion in Sussex bringing the plant size to 210,000 square feet.

Rep. James Sensenbrenner was a speaker at the Sussex-Lisbon sesquicentennial celebration.

More than 200 joined a celebration for Keith Gissal’s retirement from the Lannon Fire Department after 47 years of service.

Steve and Denice Berger celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary at Olde Templeton Inn.

Sussex will add another deputy sheriff.
