100 years ago – week of Oct. 12, 1911
William Howard Taft is the United States President.
In the automobile business, Charles Franklin Kettering invents an automobile self starter.
50 years ago – week of Oct. 12, 1961
Frank Grogan, 96, the first Sussex Village President and a 1922 charter member of the Sussex Fire Department has died at his Silver Spring Road home. He was the oldest living person in Sussex when he died on Oct. 2. He was born in 1865. He is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.
On Oct. 9, children were given rides in the 1931 Ford Pirsch fire truck as part of Fire Prevention Week.
25 years ago – week of Oct. 12, 1986
The Art Manke retirement home in Lisbon has attracted about 200 bidders. Manke a former local official and county supervisor is moving to Florida at age 71.
Marie Warner, Sussex senior center coordinator, received a 25-inch TV and video cassette player from a grant.
The Hamilton football team beat previously undefeated Brookfield Central 43-0.
10 years ago – week of Oct. 12, 2001
The Hamilton boys cross country coach is Lara Lopez.
The Sussex Fire Department is holding a fundraiser to purchase thermal imaging cameras at a cost of about $13,000.
Hamilton cross country runner Paul Gutmann remains undefeated with consistent state best times in 5000-meter courses.
Lisbon dropped its pursuit to incorporate as a village.

A grand opening was held for Lannon’s Whispering Ridge subdivision on Highway 74.
The Sussex YMCA is slated to begin construction in three years.
Thomas Smith, 65, a Boy Scout leader and fundraiser for the Pauline Haass library has died.
