100 years ago – 1911
Last month 13 young girls were camping at Lake Five and a wind-rain storm came up. The girls tried for hours to tent pegs (holding them down) to save the then from being blown away, but finally lost the battle to the elements. They did find a nearby cottage that they took refuge in and counted their wounds. Is 13 unlucky?
50 years ago – 1961
Lannon was the 14-4 champs of the Eastern Division of Land ‘O Lakes baseball. The have three Dubnicka brothers and two Reimer brothers on the team.
The Lannon Nike site has been inactivated and the last of 110 officers and men stationed at the complex have been reassigned elsewhere in the greater Milwaukee area air defense system. It originated in 1956 using land on Lannon Road and Menomonee Avenue. It is anticipated that these land masses will be sold or find new uses.
25 years ago – 1986
Sussex has adopted an ordinance to set up a Fire commission Board.
The Sussex Park Board has located a site for the burial of the Sussex Lisbon Sesquicentennial time capsule. It is near the Weaver Drive and Main Street entrance. It will be large in size as a burial vault donated by Schmidt Funeral Parlor is being used. The opening is set for the year 2036.
10 years ago – 2001
Sandy Mack has purchased the three unit complex adjacent to the Piggly Wiggly store. The complex is the former Zion Evangelical Church, the parsonage and the former North Western Railroad Department. Mack has been a long time tenant in the former church basement with her Sussex Country Printing.
5 years ago – 2006
Republicans in Waukesha will pick a new County District Attorney as incumbent Paul Bucher is not running. The two viable candidates are Dennis Krueger and Brad Schimel.
A new 22 acre industrial park is going up on Lisbon and Duplainville Road
Sussex baseball leader Bob Jones died at the age of 64 while playing golf.

100 years ago – Sept. 14, 1911
Under state law you must be 16 to drive or have an adult in the car with you.
A $5 tax is imposed on automobiles and two license plates are issued to each car owner.
50 years ago – Sept. 14, 1961
Construction has begun for two 75-foot elevators at Holy Hill.
Dial service telephones are now available in Lannon.
Zurheide ice cream is $1.19 a gallon or $1.29 for other flavors.
25 years ago – Sept. 14, 1986
A neighborhood park is developing in Prides Crossing Subdivision.
Two blocks of Champeny Drive were underwater for two days after a rain storm.
10 years ago – Sept. 14, 2001
Avis Dallman has served the Hamilton School District for 25 years.
The Lannon Land O’ Lakes baseball team has won its first two games in the playoffs scoring 12-1 over Racine and 11-1 over West Bend Company. Jay Olszewski hit a grand slam homerun against West Bend.
Paul Gutmann is a state-ranked distance runner for Hamilton.

100 years ago – Sept. 21, 1911
In Richfield a tragic accident involving a train and a horse and buggy kills two adults and two children ages 7 and 11 months.
The Civil War monument for Waukesha County went up in the city and there was a great ceremony with many Civil War veterans attending. The 39-foot-high white granite monument is near the Waukesha County Public Library in Cutler Park. Sgt. Alfred Weaver of Lisbon attended. He was in the 28th Wis. Volunteer Infantry Regiment that fought down the Mississippi River.
50 years ago – Sept. 21, 1961
Civil defense classes are being offered.
Ralph and Milo Hardiman are running the Hardiman Conoco Oil Co. in Sussex.
Wagner’s Inn of Lannon has again won the Menomonee Falls adult softball Monday night men’s league championship. Starting in 1958, the team had an opening loss, then a championship year and two more after. They are on a 53 game-winning streak. The big hitters are Bill Gabraith, Eddie Evans and Rollie Kubbernus.
25 years ago – Sept. 21, 1986
The recent heavy rains caused Sussex Creek to overflow into the Sussex swimming quarry stripping an estimated 100 tons of beach sand into the quarry bottoms.
Sussex has a new postmaster, Bernice Harris.
The Village of Sussex has purchased three lots on the northwest corner of Maple and Main. It intends to tear down the 125-year-old former Richard Weaver cream brick home.
10 years ago – Sept. 21, 2001
The Sussex Fire Department is completing an $1,100,000 expansion of its facilities.
Despite a soggy day, tens of thousands attended the annual Halquist Dozer Day fundraiser. An estimated $50,000 to $60,000 was raised for the Hamilton Education Foundation according to Tom Halquist.
Mike Gest is the quarterback for the Hamilton football team.
Dan Wnuk with 22 RBIs led the Land O’Lakes this past season in that category while close behind him was teammate Scott Hagen with 20 RBIs.
Five years ago – Sept. 21, 2006
The Sussex Civic Center Park has been renamed Weyer Park for 26-year Sussex Park Board member and former board president Elsie Mae Weyer. She lived her entire life, of 79 years, on Main Street across from the park and the Pauline Haass Library.
Sussex Quiznos closed suddenly.

100 years ago – Sept. 28, 1911
Menomonee Falls High School will not have a football team this year because of lack of interest.
The harvest of sugar beets is being held up by recent rains.
50 years ago – Sept. 28, 1961
A 12-lesson dance class is being offered at the Sussex Community Center for ages 5 and up. Cost is $4. Bernice Goowitzer is the instructor.
Construction on the new Menomonee Park north of Lannon has begun.
Elmer Schultz’s grain silos on North Lannon Road have been razed.

The Sussex VFW is adding a 24-by-24-foot addition to its clubhouse as it celebrates its 40th anniversary.
The No. 1 singles player in girls tennis for Hamilton is Cathy Krueger.
From July 1 to Sept. 26, 21.76 inches of rain fell. Average yearly rain is 30.50.
Wanaki Golf Course has been closed for a couple of weeks because of high water.
10 years ago – Sept. 28, 2001
Flags are flying half mast in recognition of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Gasoline is up to $3 per gallon.
The speed limit on Highway 164 from Sussex to Waukesha will be reduced to 45 mph.
Christ Our Savior Church held a ground breaking ceremony for a new addition to the church on Silver Spring Drive.
Five years ago – Sept. 28, 2006
Gasoline is down to $2.29 per gallon.
The Sussex water committee is authorizing a shallow well to drop the radium level to a U.S. approved level or lower.
