Quartaro was Lannon village president 25 years – Friends say he was dedicated to serving community’s residents

If Nick Quartaro ‘s funeral Saturday is anything like his life, St. James Church in Menomonee Falls will be packed with well-wishers.
Many of those close to the former Lannon village president of 25 years said Thursday he was a master at getting along with others, and that made him a good civic leader, a supportive father and a lifelong friend.
Quartaro died Tuesday after a five-year battle with cancer. He was 68.
“He loved Lannon , and he loved all the people in Lannon ,” said Bill Reilly,Quartaro ‘s old college roommate who went to work with Quartaro as Lannon village attorney for several years. “He never told me why he loved it, but it was obvious,” Reilly said.
Quartaro was elected village president by a write-in vote in 1962 after village residents convinced him he was the perfect person for the job, his wife, Patricia, said.
Nick Quartaro , the son of Lannon ‘s village bartender and barber [Cuono “Peanuts” Quartaro], was trusted by people to keep the community’s best interests in mind, his wife said. He did this to the best of his ability, she added.
When village residents hotly debated installing sewage systems, Quartaro patiently listened to all sides. When Highway 74 was built during his tenure, Quartaro insisted on including gutters and sidewalks so people could walk along the thoroughfare.
“He was always trying to make it better in Lannon . He listened to the people, and he did what he felt was best,” his wife said.
Nick Quartaro worked for 42 years in positions that included partner and managing partner for an accounting firm, Conley-McDonald of Brookfield. When that firm merged with one that handled the village’s accounting work, Quartaro agreed to resign as village president in 1986 to avoid a conflict of interest.
Even after his resignation, he stayed in touch with his friends in office. Quartaro loved getting together with the other trustees to beat them at sheepshead. He saw his friends at church gatherings and at neighborhood taverns, Reilly said.
Quartaro managed to have plenty of time for his home and family, whether it was coaching Little League, teaching his children football or using his treasured John Deere tractor to cut the grass, his wife said.
“He had strengths in so many fields. He loved people,” she said. “I know this is going to be quite a large funeral.”
Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Schmidt & Bartelt Funeral Service, N84-W17937 Menomonee Ave., Menomonee Falls.
The services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church, W220-N6588 Town Line Road, Menomonee Falls.
Besides his wife, Quartaro is survived by his mother, Mary; sisters, Diane (Steve) Sobieski and Marietta (Ron) Marshall; sons, Anthony (Linda) and Andrew (Heather); daughters Mary Quartaro and Carrie (Jay) Madderom; and two grandchildren.
Memorials to the cancer department of the Medical College of Wisconsin were suggested.
