Ray Semrow, 89, died Dec. 27, 2000.He was born, raised and lived all his life in the Lannon-Sussex area. Ray was not well educated – he only completed Willow Spring Grade School – but he made up for this lack of education by being a solid contributor to his community, church and family.
He was the first-born in a family of 13 children. His mother, Margaret Guilfoyle, died when Ray was young, and his father, Gus Semrow, married a second time to a widow with children.
Ray was born July 19, 1911, on a farm off Mill Road, east of Whiskey Corners. Today, this land is part of Silver Spring Country Club.
With a house full of children, Ray had to enter the work force soon after grade school. His first job, aside from family farming, was at the Lannon-based Walter Meat Market. During the day, he delivered orders. In the evenings, he helped butcher meat. Ray learned to be a good butcher, later working for Sussex IGA, then Sussex Sentry, and finally for Sussex PDQ.
Ray married Evie Stephan Nov. 24, 1938, at St. Columba Church in Lake Five. The couple soon moved to Waukesha Avenue, where the Semrows spent most of their married lives. They raised Mary, Alice and Patrick in Sussex.
In 1947, Ray was asked to be a member of the 8-year-old Sussex Lions Club. He immediately took the treasurer’s job, a job that he performed for 10 years. He was a club treasurer with no money in the purse, so he pushed for accounting changes and worked with his friend Paul Fleischmann to stage a dance at Sussex Community Hall. It earned $1,800.
Ray served as the club president from 1958-58.
Ray served two terms on the Village Board. One of his key committee assignments was to the very first Sussex Park Board, of which he was elected chairman.
After his second term of office as a trustee, he ran and was defeated for the Sussex village presidency; however, he was immediately taken on as a committee and board member for many Sussex boards, most notably the planning board and the board of appeals, positions he would hold for more than 30 years.
Ray helped develop Sussex Village Park. Under his direction, the north field and Sussex Land O’ Lakes diamonds were added to Village Park.
In 1976, he started a 19-year run as a parks and grounds maintenance keeper. He mainly cut grass, but also helped prepare the diamonds, plant trees and install playground equipment.
Ray was the first food chairman of a forerunner of Lions Daze. In 1963, the Lions tagged onto an old engine show as the food concessionaire. So successful was this partnership that Lions Club decided to go on its own and start its own July homecoming festival, Lions Daze.
In 52 years, Ray never missed a monthly Lions Club meeting. It was only in his final year of life that this record was broken.
In 1993, Lions Club, which had grown from the 28 members when he joined to nearly 100 members, decided to honor the past president with the highest Lions award, the Melvin Jones Award. In 1997, Ray was also honored with the first active 50-year membership in the local club. He received a huge plaque with a clock.
Ray started life with his church, St. James Catholic, with his baptism, first confession, First Communion and confirmation. As a teenager, he became an usher and served 73 years, first in the 1847-built original St. James Chapel Church, then in the 1960-built replacement church, and in his final years at the new $4.5 million St. James Church.
In his final decade of life, Ray moved from his Sussex Waukesha Avenue home to a ranch on Sunset Drive, which leads to Sussex Village Park, the park he helped develop.
Ray’s survivors are his wife of 62 years, Evie; three children; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

June 19, 1912, “Horse Fractures Man’s Leg – Driver Kicked While Seated on Delivery Wagon. William Miller, employed in Warnkey’s galvanized iron works, had his right leg broken just above the ankle in a peculiar manner last Monday. Miller and his fellow laborer, John Thorgerson, were about to drive to their shop with their employer’s horse when the animal took fright at an automobile. The horse reared up and in doing so broke one of the snaps on the holdback straps. This break allowed the wagon to bump into the animal’s legs and it began kicking furiously, one of the blows stricking Mr. Miller on the leg, fracturing the bone. The horse then ran away and the men were thrown off their seat. In falling the line caught about Mr. Miller’s left leg and he was dragged fully fifty feet before he was released from the line by Mr. Thorgerson. He was taken to his home and the fracture reduced. He received no injuries in being dragged. The animal’s legs are badly cut as a result of its vicious kicking. July 12, 1912 – William Miller, who had his leg fractured several weeks ago is now able to move around with the aid of crutches. Nov 13, 1912 – William Miller’s leg still bothers. Dec 18, 1912 – William Mueller, who broke his leg, moved to Milwaukee. Mar 12, 1913 – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Miller, Sr., visited their sons Wm. and Steve in Milwaukee (See next entry – it appears that it was Wm and Steve in the saloon business.)
Jul 23, 1913 – Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Miller, Sr., of West Bend visited their son William in Milwaukee. He has about recovered from his fractured leg of over a year ago and is now in the saloon business at Walnut and 18th Street.
Feb 4, 1914, “The Miller Brothers (William and Steve), former West Bend boys, are now in the saloon business at 1803 Walnut St., Milwaukee.
On a postcard postmarked September 2, 1915, William wrote to his mother from Templeton (now Sussex), “Hello Ma. This the place I am going to take. Will be in WB (West Bend) in a week.” The address was simply, “Mrs. Wm. Miller, West Bend, Wis”. The picture on the postcard’s front was that of the Mammoth Springs Hotel (presently Dilly’s) under the proprietorship of one Thomas McCloskey. The Hotel was both a saloon downstairs and hotel above.

Above is a area of the 1930 Town of Menomonee Plat Map showing Section 30 where Gus Semrow had ownership of his farm. The farm originally belonged to his father-in-law, Patrick Guilfoyle. The east-west road directly to the north is Mill Rd. Evidently, the farm had a right-of-way from the road back to the property since it doesn’t have direct access.
Evelyn T. “Evie” Semrow (Nee Stephan) of Sussex passed away at 95-years-old on Sunday, April 22.
Born to Life May 12, 1916 in the Town of Richfield. Beloved wife of the late Raymond for over 62 years. Preceded in death by beloved daughter Mary, 2 sisters and 1 brother.
Survived by daughter Alice (John) Bautz of Erin and son Patrick of Florida. Dear grammie of Michelle (Robert) Mroczenski, Mike (Sue) Michels, Bradley (Rebecca) Bautz, Brett (Sara) Bautz, Brandon (fiancee Melissa) Bautz, and Terry, Daniel, Laura and Amy Semrow. Further survived by great-grandchildren, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 30 at St. James Historic Chapel W220 N6588 Town Line Rd. Menomonee Falls, from 10 a.m. until time of mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Burial to follow in church cemetery.
