James Stone, who for more than half a century has been numbered among the honored and respected citizens of Waukesha County, now resides on section 34, Lisbon Township, where he owns a good farm. He was born in Sussex County, England, February 14, 1816, and is one of s family of three sons and two daughters, whose parents were James and Maria (Smith) Stone. Four of the children are yet living: James; Stephen, a prosperous farmer of Lisbon Township; Martha, a widow of Thomas Lee, a resident of Milwaukee; and Rhoda, wife of Hon Richard Weaver, who is represented elsewhere in this work. The father was a Sussex farmer, but in 1840 crossed the briny deep to America and became a resident of Lisbon Township, Waukesha County, Wis. His life was well spent, and his honor and integrity won him universal confidence. Both Mr. and Mrs. Stone belonged to the Episcopal Church.
Our subject was reared and educated in England, and at an early age began to earn his own livelihood and to aid in the support of the family. He remained under the parental roof until his marriage, which was celebrated April 18, 1839, Miss Frances Sisley becoming his wife. To them were born seven children, four sons and three daughters, but only two are living. William A. born in Ohio, December 11, 1841, was married October 13, 1874, to Miss Hannah Bowes, a native of New York, born June 29, 1851. Her parents were William and Jane (Thompson) Bowes, the former native of England and the latter of the Empire State. William Stone and his wife have one daughter, Effie L., who was graduated from the Lisbon school, and has also been well educated music. She is a member of St. Alban’s Parish. The mother is a member of the Episcopal church of Sussex. The father is a Democrat in politics and in pursuit of fortune followed farming. All who know him esteem him highly for his sterling worth and strict integrity. Elizabeth, the surviving daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Stone, is now the wife of Hiram Hindes, a farmer of Empire Prairie, Mo. They have six children, four sons and two daughters.
Mr. Stone was called upon to mourn the loss of his wife October 27, 1853. She was laid to rest by the side of her four children in Sussex Cemetery, and a beautiful monument has been erected to their memory. For his second wife, Mr. Stone chose Mrs. Elizabeth Lucy (Fielder) Chester, but she has also passed away.
When Mr. Stone crossed the Atlantic he sailed from London, and after a voyage of about five weeks, landed in New York, whence he made his way on the Erie Canal to Buffalo. He then proceeded to Cleveland, where his money gave out, and he left his family in Ohio, while he continued on to Waukesha County. On reaching Milwaukee he made inquiry concerning the Bonham and Weaver settlement, and there spent a few days, after which he returned to Cleveland. In 1842, with his wife and family, he came by the Lakes to Milwaukee, and as there was no pier, Mr. Stone made his way to land in a little boat. While he was on shore a storm arose and the sailing vessel was almost driven back to Racine, and three days elapsed before it again reached Milwaukee.
Mr Stone secured a claim of forty acres of canal land in Lisbon Township for twenty schillings per acre, and afterwards bought forty acres of Government land at $1.25. His home was a two roomed log cabin 18×24 feet in size, with a shake roof and a rough stone chimney. Indians visited the neighborhood frequently, and Mr. Stone has seen as many as sixteen deer in his field at one time. In his farm work he used ox teams, and in that way hauled his produce to market in Milwaukee. As the years have passed, however, his farm of eighty acres has become a highly cultivated tract, supplied with all modern improvements and accessories, It is pleasantly located a mile and a half from Sussex, and is a valuable place. In his home are two silk embroidered pictures more than one hundred years old, one representing the infant Moses in the bulrushes, and the other Joseph and Mary on their flight into Egypt. Mr. Stone for some years has served as vestryman in St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, and has lived an honorable, upright life well worthy of emulation. He may truly be called a self-made man, for his success is due entirely to his own efforts, and now in his declining years, as the result of his enterprise and industry, he has a competence which supplies him with all the comforts of life.
