100 years ago – 1908
Hills Jewelry Store in Menomonee Falls offered pocket watches with solid-nickel cases for $3.75 or with 10-year gold-fill cases for $5.50.
50 years ago – 1958
The Sussex Fire Department sent some of its firefighters to a four-day training session in West Allis: Chief Roy Evert, Assistant Chief Robert Stier, Captains Ray Podolske and Ray Schroeder and firefighters Bill Beier and Charles Zimmermann.
The Lisbon Town Board, chaired by Paul Pichler, considered passing a local zoning ordinance.
25 years ago – 1983
Sal Maglio, John Bauer, Robert O’ Laughlin and Jack Nefstead competed for three open seats on the Sussex Village Board.
Sussex held a public hearing on Quad/Graphics’ application for a permit to build a printing plant on 64 acres in east Sussex.
The Sussex Woman’s Club staged its second annual Easter egg hunt for 250 kinds in Village Park.
10 years ago – 1998
Nine people were cited for underage drinking at Shooters Pub.
Sussex Public Works Director Robert Patenaude retired.
More than 600 people attended the annual Sussex-Lisbon Easter egg hunt in Sussex Village Park.
5 years ago – 2003
The Hamilton School District broke ground June 3 for Marcy School in Menomonee Falls and a week later, June 10, for a massive remodeling of Hamilton High School and its new Fine Arts Center.

100 years ago – 1908
Berschens, Schroeder & Co. in Lannon leased the Lake Shore Stone Co. building to house its flour and feed store, which will also sell dynamite and other explosives, as a side business for its general store in Lannon.
50 years ago – 1958
German-born quarry worker Frederick Schultz of Lannon, 86, passed away.
Rudy Kerstein was rewarded for 28 years of safe driving as a Sussex rural mail carrier. He actually deserved it for 43 years, but the post office’s safe-driving records only went back 28 years then.
25 years ago – 1983
Randall Schuldt ran against incumbent Sally Droese for the Sussex seat on the Hamilton School Board.
Sussex made David Anderson its village administrator.
Snows and rains since April Fool’s Day flooded basements on Champeny Drive, Park Court and Sumac Lane.
10 years ago – 1998
Elliott Knapp found a nearly 2-foot-long snapping turtle in his Vista Lane yard.
Hamilton named Brad Kasprzak, Jenny Engel, Kevan Guetzke, Russ Rautkowski, Tia Janssen, Susan Golner, Katie Lembke, Stephanie Kendziorski, Heather Fender, Sherman Traylor, Marc Dobberstien, Lindsay Cain and Melissa and Michael Schweinert its scholar-athletes of the year.
5 years ago – 2003
Margaret Hoffman (nee Butler), 84, died. She arrived in Lisbon with its second wave of immigration from Germany in the 1880s. She taught at Lisbon Plank School, Nelson School off Town Line Road and Merton Grade School.

100 years ago – 1908
The ladies of St. James Catholic Church held a basket social.
The Lannon Leimback Tavern hosted a well-attended social hop.
Lannon businessmen discussed forming a fire company after two fires that required help from Menomonee Falls Fire Co. to extinguish.
50 years ago – 1958
Art Weyer was named commander of the Lannon VFW.
It looked as though the Town of Menomonee Falls would disappear to annexation by the Villages of Menomonee Falls, Butler and Lannon.
The municipal and school leaders of Butler, Marcy, Lannon, Lisbon, Sussex and Willow Springs were invited to a special meeting at Butler School to discuss the creation of a new high school.
25 years ago – 1983
Quad/Graphics got the OK to start building its Sussex plant.
Sussex Boy Scout Troop 95 leader Don Miklautsch was honored with a testimonial dinner and awards for his long service.
Joe Marchese demanded a recount after losing a Lisbon Town Board race to Charles Schuldt by 28 votes, only to see his opponent’s margin of victory grow to 52 after the recount.
10 years ago – 1998
Barb Hart, a Hamilton graduate credited with winning 16 athletic letters, was elected a judge in Winnebago County by a 2-to-1 margin.
5 years ago – 2003
Fire and smoke caused an estimated $130,000 in damage to the Quad/Graphics train.
Allyn Wasley bought the Carousel Drive-In at Richmond and Lisbon roads.
Nikki Flegner was the powerhouse star of the Hamilton girls fast-pitch softball team.

100 years ago – 1908
Walter Motz of Colgate excavated his basement and started building a new home.
St. James Catholic Church provided religious instruction in their own language for the parish’s newest members, immigrants from Germany, on Sunday afternoons.
Eleven stores selling “spirits” in Menomonee Falls objected to a new ordinance forcing them to close on Sundays.
50 years ago – 1958
Mrs. Melvin Horne chaired the Lisbon Cancer Cure drive.
Sussex Lions going to the annual Lions State Bowling Tournament were: Robert, Roy and Philip Stier; Paul Cain; Paul Fleischmann; Ray Semrow; William Beier; Allen Wenzel; H.F. Keller; Homer Stone; Albin Halquist; Charles Woodchick; Gary Braeger; and Milo Hardiman.
25 years ago – 1983
Lisbon considered buying the Robert Bartlett farm on Oakwood Road off Lake Five Road.
Lillie Reimer celebrated her 80th birthday with all of her 13 children.
Bill Galbraith bagged a 20-pound turkey in the state’s hunt.
10 years ago – 1998
Sussex closed the controversial Club Safari, demanding new ownership and direction before it could reopen.
Construction of the new St. James Catholic Church began. The preliminary cost estimate was $3.4 million.
5 years ago – 2003
Lisbon considered making Lisbon Police Chief Patrick Clarey’s interim appointment permanent.
Mary Quartaro, wife of one of the signers of Lannon’s 1930 incorporation petition and mother of the longest-serving Lannon village president, died at age 95.
