100 years ago — 1914

In Merton, Ms. John Schlieker died from a ruptured blood vessel in her neck. She had been beating a rug for some time prior to her sudden death.

The R. H. Gumm Quarry in Lannon has sold out to a firm in Alton, Illinois.

50 years ago — 1964

Harry Haycock (known as “Mr. Republican” in Sussex) will head up Warren Knowles’ governor’s race.

Keith Wunrow, principal of the Butler school, warned the Hamilton District Board that the hole adjacent to Butler school should be filled in.

25 years ago — 1989

Tombstone Pizza celebrated its 11th anniversary as part of the Sussex Industrial PARK. Tombstone Pizza is sold in 23 states.

Sophomore Christa Goetz had a no-hitter going it into the seventh innning. In a game for sole first place, Hamilton won 3-2 over Menomonee Falls.

10 years ago — 2004

A second gingko tree was planted at Madeline Park to honor Theresa Semrad (1939-2004).

5 years ago — 2009

The Sussex Memorial Day parade had a popular entry with the Fire Department’s 1931 Pirsch pumper.

100 years ago — 1914

The Lannon news column in the local paper is called “Lannon Chips.”

The Wisconsin Stone Co. has recently started operations in Lannon.

Ed Flanagan is the present active secretary of the Lannon Quarry Co. He recently acquired an order for 20 carloads of curbing for Milwaukee and Cudahy.

50 years ago — 1964

Ray Semrow was re-elected chairman of the Sussex Park Board. John P. Kraemer is the vice president and Elizabeth Ries is the secretary. Arnold Erickson is the new appointee to the board. Other members are Isabelle Podolske, Fred Keller and Walter Wegner.

One can buy 24-bottle cases of 12-ounce bottles (Schlitz, Blatz or Hamm’s) for $2.99 plus deposit. Gettelman and Old Milwaukee go for $2.59 per case.

25 years ago — 1989

The Wisconsin National Guard will build an armory on Maple Avenue on land now owed by Halquist Stone Co. Sussex will acquire the lot for a park, with the armory in the back corer. A 1991 completion is envisioned.

Michael Harvestine, 21, son of Waukesha County Sheriff’ deputy Art Harvestine, who is permanently stationed in Sussex, has died following an automobile accident. Michael was a pre-med student.

10 years ago — 2004

Almost 12 inches of rain fell during May (11.8 inches). From May 6 to May 24, 10.17 inches fell. With the rain and heat, Sussex resident Ted Mottl mowed his lawn 11 times during the month.

Hamilton senior Kellyn Johnson has qualified for two distance runs at the state girls track meet — the 800 meter and the 1600 meter.

James Lamb is the Lannon Village Clerk.

The Sussex Piggly Wiggly staged a grand opening.

5 years ago — 2009

A controversial piece of land, 78 acres at Silver Spring and Lake Five roads, is up for sale for $2.1 million by the owners, Meissner Family Farms LLC. Earlier the site had been eyed for a proposed multi-use residential/commercial development.

Sussex trustee Pat Tetzlaff is leading a campaign to clear and clean up closed portions of the area Bug Line Recreational Trail.


100 Years Ago: 1914

Seth Pollard accompanied his father on a visit up to Oshkosh and thus young Seth of Lannon will see parts of Wisconsin on the train trip.

The former sheriff of Waukesha County is Elmer J. Dent. He has joined Company M of the Wisconsin National Guard and is expected to go down to the troubles in Mexico.

50 Years Ago: 1964

The Sussex Youth Band will present a concert at the Maple Avenue School.

A former Waukesha Sheriff’s Department Sergeant, Harold Hanrahan, who served 24 years, is coming back as he wants to run again for Sheriff of the County. He is running against Lt. Robert Baird.

25 Years Ago: 1989

The Sussex Lions had a big club shindig as they celebrated their 50th anniversary with 239 people attending the affair. The event was held at the Quilted Bear on Lannon-Mequon Road in Germantown (which is owned by Lions members).

This past month, Bob and Judy Jones celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.

Hamilton has its fifth straight conference championship in girls fastpitch softball.

10 Years Ago: 2004

Lila Busse Graser was honored for 75 years of membership in the Sussex Eastern Star. Her father, Charles Busse, was the Sussex President from 1933 to 1957.

Hamilton’s Kellyn Johnson won the WIAA state girls track 1,600 meters, and finished second in the 800.

Tammy Rocker, suspended director of the Sussex Senior Center, has handed in her resignation.

There is talk of the YMCA building in Sussex on Hwy. 164, near Clover Drive (old Zindl Pheasant farm).

5 Years Ago: 2009

Dan Heckman is out as the Hamilton girls basketball coach after 17 years.

Lannon seeks DA guidance on gun laws.

Laurie Dutcher is the Lannon municipal judge.

Lisbon will hire a second part-time paramedic, who will also serve as a firefighter.

Hamilton has added a 500-square-foot press box at its football field, thus having one on each side of the field.

100 years ago – 1914

The spark that started the Great War (World War I) was ignited when Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne, and his wife were assassinated June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo by Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip.

Miss May Joecks of Lannon is visiting friends in Templeton.

50 years ago – 1964

Seven Hamilton youths have been chosen for a Wisconsin Youth Conservation Camp program in Vilas County; they are Mike Lewis, Roger Munns, Larry Podolske, Steve Torkildson, Randy Reimer, John Smithyman and James Clark.

Mrs. Alfred Kuenzi writes the north Lisbon and Colgate local newspaper column.

25 years ago – 1989

Wendy Rick is the valedictorian at Hamilton High School with Leah Scheele the salutatorian of the school’s 25th graduating class.

Kim Davey is the conference MVP and is taking the softball team to state.

Gene Marx is the Sussex Lions Club President.

There is a new park developing at a former quarry on Waukesha Avenue, a block north of Main Street. It is being developed by the use of volunteer National Guard units and equipment. In cleaning up an old abandoned quarry, a heavy safe was found in the underbrush with nothing inside.

10 years ago – 2004

The Sussex Lions held an awards ceremony as plaques were awarded to Don Edmonds, Paul Schmidt, Al Schroeder, Nick Wolfe, James Skarda, Anthony LeDonne and Harry Hinchcliffe. Bon Johanning is the new president of the 65-year-old Lions Club of Sussex.

The proposed YMCA for Sussex will have a pool.

The mining of gravel is eyed by Payne and Dolan in Lisbon. The plan would save Lisbon $100,000 in re-paving but it would close down Plainview Road for 12-16 months east of Hillside Road.

5 years ago – 2009

An Illinois company is trying to find new investors for its proposed indoor “Sportsplex” on Silver Spring Drive, near the entrance to Templeton Middle School. It was originally proposed in February of 2007, but the recession has held it back.

Two longtime local couples, John and Carol David and Charles and Marlene Goetz, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversaries.
