100 years ago – May 5, 1910
Our sister community, Menomonee Falls is having a big problem with speeding automobiles in the village. There is a group working to get speed laws in place.
In other road news, “street sprinkling” to settle the dust will begin as soon as needed.
50 years ago – May 5, 1960
Civil Defense will hold a national alert exercise on May 3, 1960, when sirens will ring at 1:33 p.m. and officials will see how fast streets and byways are cleared. Called, “Operation 1960,” it is part of three days of national activities.
The Lannon Marble and Jacks tournament is Saturday, May 7, at the Lannon Grade School grounds.
25 years ago – May 5, 1985
Integration talks and law suits are reaching a critical point in suburban schools including Hamilton High.
The Sussex Jaycettes donated $350 to the Waukesha Sheriff’s Department toward the purchase of bullet-proof vests.
10 years ago – May 5, 2000
The Sussex Lioness Club held its fifth annual fashion show and fundraiser. Emcees were Pat Bartlett and Al Olmstead.
The Wierl barn on Woodside Road was burned by the Sussex and Lisbon fire departments. Also burned were the house and four other buildings.
Five years ago – May 5, 2005
Redeemer United Church of Christ is one step closer to rebuilding a new church to replace the one destroyed by fire on March 14, 2004.
Jem Photo/Galaxy Video closed and Seigo’s Japanese Steak House is set to open in Sussex at the site of the former lumber yard.

100 years ago – May 12, 1910
The Seaborn family with 320 acres is the largest land owner in Lisbon. It lies west of the Lisbon Central Cemetery and beyond Mary Hill Road.
The McKerrow farm has grown to 300 acres on both sides of Lisbon Road, just east of today’s Lyndale Road.
50 year ago – May 12, 1960
Last week in this column it was announced that Lannon would have its annual marbles and jacks contest. Now this week the Lannon VFW has announced that they will hold a state tournament in marbles on May 14 at the Lannon Fire Department grounds.
25 year ago – May 12, 1985
Rose Korbeck of Lisbon turned 100 years old April 28.
Terri Metzger is the pitcher of the undefeated Hamilton girls softball team.
Bill Galbraith of Lannon got a 14 pound turkey at a Boscobel hunt.
Lannon is searching for a clerk-treasurer as both positions have to be filled as Charles DeLany and Harvey Rossman have both retired.

Sussex will attempt to start a farmers market at the Civic Center.
The Christ Our Savior Church is planning a $1,800,000 renovation and enlargement.
Sussex Main Street was closed off by the cooperating Sussex and Lisbon Fire Departmebt as a gas line leading to the Village Hall was broken.

Father Gene Doda, after 12 years, is set to leave St. James Catholic Church for a new church, St. Thomas in Waterford.
Pat Ehnert is the “Quilt Lady” in Sussex.
The Saturday annual Proud American Rally had its largest Sussex turnout with 200 people, 80 more than last year. The money raised goes to the USO.

100 years ago – May 19, 1910
Miss Rose Kolander of Colgate was married May 1 to George Muehl.
At the North Lisbon Road Methodist Church a concert was given on May 20 with an admission fee of 15 cents.
50 years ago – May 19, 1960
Harvey Mamerow, a former Lisbon farmer (where Quad/Graphics is today) died May 24, 1960 at age 64.
Butler could be annexed by Wauwatosa to get out of being part of the Hamilton School District.
Local grocery stores are offering a special on two loaves of bread for 29 cents.
25 years ago – May 19, 1985
The Hamilton School board expects to lease the underused Willow Springs grade school to Quad/Graphics.
The Metzger sisters, Terri and Julie, mowed down the opposition as the Hamilton girls fast pitch softball team is near clinching the Braveland championship as they are 9-0 in conference play. A big hitter is Ann Nettesheim who went 8 for 10 in three games.
10 years ago – May 19, 2000
Although she was only 3-years-old in 1988 when Colgate resident Kristin Steffek died of meningitis, she was honored on her 16th birthday with a flowering crab tree being planted in her honor at the Sussex Civic Center park.

Sussex resident John Rollins of Stoney Ridge Subdivision wins $30,000 from the state lottery from a ticket she bought at the Sussex Pick ‘n Save.
The Joecks family which came to the Lannon area in 1893 held a 40-person reunion in Lannon.
100 years ago – May 26, 1910
Miss Betha Reive was married in Sussex to Carl Krchoff. Following the wedding, the entire wedding group drove to Menomonee Falls to have a formal wedding photo taken at the Reinhard Studio.
50 years ago – May 26, 1960
Mrs. Lela Kaderabek was honored at the Sussex VFW for her 22 years of teaching (15 years at Sussex schools). She is the widow of former Sussex Fire Chief, village trustee and World War I soldier Claude “Butch” Kaderabek who went to France and was a Sussex butcher by trade.
25 years ago – May 26, 1985
Hamilton teachers face a layoff because of continuing declining enrollment.
Pam Gall has been selected to be clerk treasurer in Lannon.
The king and queen of the Hamilton Junior Prom are Trevor Claybough and Sue Stadler.
10 years ago – May 26, 2000
It was reported that in 1999 the Friends of the Pauline Haass Library sold used books that raised over $2,000 which the Friends use to pay for unfunded library betterment.
St John’s Lutheran in Lannon will be building a new church at a cost of $2,900,000
Five years ago – May 26, 2005
Donald Unrich is the commander of the Sussex Horne-Mudlitz VFW Post 6377.
For the third time in three years Jim Liermann from the Hamilton boys track team has made state. He has the fourth best qualifying distance in the triple jump (formerly called the “hop, step and jump.”)
Al Keckeisen was the coach of the Hamilton girls soccer team that went 12-9-2 this past season.
