100 Years Ago – 1910
Lannon resident N. I. Davis committed suicide in the forenoon of Jan. 6, is causing consternation in the Village. Born in the Lannon-area Davis farm, Aug. 19, 1856, he had a normal breakfast with the family, afterwards going to his office. He did not respond to the noontime ring to come to dinner, and an investigation showed that he was dead on his couch in his office from a revolver in his hand.
50 years ago – 1960
The Sussex Community Hall was used to host a “Wills and transfer of properties” seminar put on by the Home Demonstration leaders.
Tide soap comes in four different sized boxes at the local stores, Large (33 cents), Giant (79 cents), King ($1.33), and the 16-pound box for $3.95.
25 years ago – 1985
Paul Fleishmann, who has lost the last two elections to Sussex Village President John Tews, has taken out papers to again run against Tews for Sussex Village President.
Heidi Trapp of Lisbon has been in the Peace Corps for the past two years. She has been serving in Honduras.
After 13 years, Waukesha Coroner Donald Eggum is finally retiring.
10 years ago – 2000
The much feared “Y2K” world’s dreaded end arrived without a glitch. There was no collapse of the Internet as predicted by doom sayers. It was business as usual, On New Year’s eve there was an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display in the Sussex Village Park. An estimated 2,000 people attended.
Jenny Prochazka is the 1999 Sussex Sun athlete of the year finishing first in the WIAA State track and field shot put event.
Five years ago – 2005
Being the first of the year, Lisbon residents will pay $400 for an ambulance trip to the hospital by LFD, plus $10 per mile for the mileage to the hospital chosen.
Hank Carlson, a current Waukesha County Supervisor, and President of the Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society, has died at age 68 on Dec. 27. He was seeking reelection as the Sussex Village President.

Five Years Ago – 2005
Accused killer Todd Van Lare has a severe delusional disorder but was deemed competent to stand trial for the murder of his wife.
The new “no frills” Sussex Steakhouse is the fifth restaurant at N63 W23929 Main St. Its previous incarnation as Arturo’s Kantina, a Mexican eatery, lasted just a year.
The Hamilton Girls’ Varsity Basket Team played their best game of the season, winning over West Allis Central’s Bulldogs, 63-58.
SLAHS Board of Directors elect Betty Mindemann as society President due to Hank Carlson’s death on December 27th.

100 years ago – 1910
With the big snows, autos were not seen on the roads. A snow shovel was essential, even to go a half-block. It was reported that 50 men were shoveling out the roads leading to Lannon.
The Rev. Alfred Held was presented with a fine fur-lined coat by the Sussex Methodist Church for Christmas
50 years ago – 1960
The St. James Catholic Grade School boys basketball team defeated St. Luke’s, 28-25, with Danny Gruelich having 10 points and Jack Curtis 7 points.
A Friday then Monday double storm dumped 20 inches of snow on Sussex.
25 years ago – 1985
But Hutter, the Sussex village engineer, had worked for the village for 12 years, while Robert Patnode had 15 years of employment.
Tom Tradewell of Sussex received the Northeast District (Boy Scouting district) Award of Merit.
Hamilton freshman wrestler Jeff Mueller, at 98 pounds, fashioned a 190-2 record. He was the third Mueller brother to be on the team.
10 years ago – 2000
The Dale Dawson Lannon Stone Products quarry donated a 32-pound piece of “float copper” to the future Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society museum. Thought to have been brought to Lannon 10,000 years ago by a 1,000-foot thick glacier, it was deposited in a niche of the surface of the bedrock Niagara limestone of this quarry.
Five years ago – 2005
Betty Mindemann was chosen to replace the late Hank Carlson as the president of the Sussex-Lisbon Area Historical Society.
A 10th generation baby of Lisbon pioneers was baptized at St. Alban’s. Baptized was Abigail Cagle, daughter of Michael and Jennifer (nee Hollenstein) Cagle. Jennifer, a former star basketball player at Hamilton, had descendents going back to the founding family of Lisbon, the Weavers.

100 Years ago – 1910
Jeremiah Smith of Lisbon died Jan. 8, 1910. He was born Nov. 5, 1829 in Peasmarsh, England, and came to Lisbon in 1849. He married the daughter of Melinda Weaver, Ann Rebecca Weaver. They had six children. His wife wife, Francis of Sussex, and children, Mrs. Otho Noble (Sussex), George (Tacoma, Wash.), William (Lannon), and Charles (Lisbon) survive.
50 Years ago – 1960
In a 73-53 win over Menomonee Falls High School basketball over Cedarburg, Sussex’s Bobby Jones had 6 points while Sussex’s other MFHS player, Ken Kerstein, had 2.
Frying chickens cost 29 cents a pound.
25 Years ago – 1985
On Jan. 19, the temperature was minus 27 degrees in Sussex.
Five Sussex fire men will serve as village fire inspectors on a rotating schedule. they include: Tim Hartman, Tom Schlei, Gabe Kolesari, Jake White, and Corky Curtis.
10 Years ago – 2000
The Woodside Fairways golf course subdivision is approved.
Ted Siewert, 81, a Lisbon farmer on Jay Lane, died.
The Sussex-Lisbon Joint Library Board headed by Joanne Smith received a $15,000 donation from the Sussex Lions Club.
Five Years ago – 2005
The incoming administrator for the Village of Sussex is Evan Teich. He officially starts in March.
Three men: Robert Hutton, Dan Meissner, and Christopher Meagher are running to replace the late hank Carlson to represent Sussex and parts of Lisbon on the Waukesha County Board of Supervisors.
