100 years ago — June 12, 1913

Wisconsin defeated a suffrage vote in the state for the right to allow women to vote in the presidential election by a majority of 92,000 voters.

In Major League Baseball, the two Philadelphia teams are leading the leagues, American at 22-10 and the National at 23-7. Meanwhile the New York Yankees are in last place at 9-24 in the American League.

Butter sells at 25 cents a pound, cheese at 13 cents a pound and eggs at 16.5 cents a dozen on the whole sale market.

50 years ago — 1963

In May, the Sussex Village Board approved and appointed a Park and Recreation Board, with a main purpose of finding uses for and instituting major use of the 1958 Sussex Village Park. the members of this first Sussex Park Board were Chairman Ray Semrow, Vice Chairperson Isabell Podolske, Secretary Jerry Dallman, plus members Elizabeth Ries, Walter Wagener, John Kraemer and Fred Keller. Incidentally, the first Sussex Land O’Lakes Baseball game was played this recent Memorial Day on a new hard ball field on the southeast corner of the park. Members of the LOL team, along with Keller, Semrow and Wagener from the board, built the field.

25 years ago — 1988

A new Aerostar minivan costs $998, while the new Ford Conversion (big) van costs $15,995.

The leaders of the Sussex Eastern Star has a husband and wife team doing the honors, Helen Nelson is the new Worthy Matron of the Lila B. Graser Chapter of the Sussex Eastern Star, while husband John Nelson served as the Worthy Patron. John has been a 30 year member of the Masons.

10 years ago — 2003

Tyler Goetsch was the winning pitcher and hit a home run as the Hamilton Charger baseball team opened its season with a 6-4 win over Kettle Moraine.

Greg Brehm, 16, had an Eagle Scout project completed when he, fathers and fellow scouts cleared a “jungle” of grapevines, box elders and brush from behind the new local Sussex-Lisbon museum.

Five years ago — 2008

The Lannon Stoneman defeated the Sussex Land O’ Lakes baseball team 15-3. It was the first loss of the season for the 5-1 Sussex Cardinals. Lannon is undefeated in league play.

A severe rain storm submerged parts of Sussex as 2008 continues to be wet and snowy. Sussex had 8.59 inches of rain since June 1.
