100 years ago – Week of May 1, 1913
There is a lot of local interest about the area’s three post offices: One in Sussex, another in Templeton and one in Colgate. The story is that in Granville, robbers entered the local post office at night and used dynamite to blow open the post office safe. They ran away with $200 in cash and stamps.
Miss Mary Mathiak of Lannon has married Ferdinand Krahn at St. John’s Lutheran Church.
50 years ago – 1963
In the recent Hamilton kindergarten approval vote it was stated in the papers that the Town of Pewaukee voted against it by a 14 percent margin. That is true, but only seven voters voted: Four against and three for it.
Dog N’ Suds in Menomonee Falls is advertising their famous “Coney Dog” for 29 cents, but you can get a second for 1 cent more.
Chips trucking will deliver six yards of topsoil for $15.
25 years ago – 1988
The price for the 121-acre Bartlett Farm for a Lisbon community park is quoted at $125,000. Heading up the acquisition are Sally Kovacik and Marlene Kumitsch, along with Lisbon supervisor Jane Stadler, among others.
In the recent presidential primary, Sussex, Lisbon and Lannon all gave Michael Dukakis the most votes.
10 years ago – 2003
Mary Quartaro (nee Alloy), the mother of former Lannon 25-year Village President Nick Quartaro, has died this past month. She was the wife of Peanuts Quartaro, a 1930 signer of the incorporation of Lannon.
Kohl’s is coming to Sussex. Sussex Chairman Mike Knapp praised the deal, saying, “Now I can buy socks without leaving Sussex!”

The ex-Lisbon police chief, Terry Martorano, is suing Sussex for breach of contract by the Town. Martorano was let go Dec. 31 when Lisbon changed policing from in-house to a contract with the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department.
Hamilton Athletic Booster Club is seeking $800,000 to upgrade athletic facilities.

100 years ago, May 9, 1913
Mary Jane (Venables) Cooling was the second burial in 1912 for St. Alban’s, as she died May 9, 1913. She was born in England in 1826.
The Geiger Counter is invented by a German in 1913. The name of the inventor is Hans Geiger.
50 years ago, 1963
Whole fried chicken costs 29 cents a pound at local stores.
Lisbon Town Assessor Fred Linstedt will work with a professional St. Louis firm to do a complete comprehensive reassessment of Lisbon properties. The cost will be $10,000. Complaints have surfaced at the annual Lisbon meeting about the reassessment.
Sussex dentist Dr. Donald Cotey was the featured speaker at the Sussex 4H monthly meeting.
25 years ago, 1988
American Eagle Amusements is proposing an arcade in the former Sussex Creek side variety store but is balking at the $500 arcade fee.
Wednesday, April 13, the Lisbon Fire Department had five calls starting with a farm machine shed. There were also two grass fires and two auto accidents.
Julie Metzger for the second year in a row has a no-hitter against Brookfield Central for Hamilton girls fast pitch softball.
10 years ago, 2003
Holocaust five year survivor Henry Golde, a published author, was a guest at the Friends of the Pauline Haas Library, telling of his multi brushes with death during WWII in German concentration camps, starting in 1940. Nearly 100 people attended his performance.
The Hamilton girls soccer team won the Charger Classic Invitational, winning over Greendale in the championship, 2-1.
Five years ago, 2008
Halquist Stone Co. has finally completed an underpass on Highway K for the purpose of being able to go from the north quarry to the south quarry, without impeding Lisbon traffic. Lisbon Road (Highway K) had to be closed for 68 days.
Chelsea Spangenberg pitched a no-hitter for the Hamilton girls softball team as the Charger girls won 10-0 over Brookwood as part of a Poynette tournament.

100 years ago – May 15, 1913
Margaret Champeny of Lisbon passed away April 27 at age 12. She was the daughter of George and Isabel Champeny. She died of typhoid fever.
The Lannon firm of Flanagan and Son has been awarded the contract to furnish 5,000 tons of stone to be used in Columbia County.
The Lannon showing of a movie picture was a big three-day event in the Stone City.
Salesmen are asking Lannon to think of installing a direct currant set of street lights.
50 years ago – 1963
A trip to Menomonee Falls new Dog N’ Suds can get you a gallon of their root beer for 49 cents.
The Sussex Nursery (Adams) is offering yard sod for 30 cents for Kentucky Blue and 35 cents for Merion … delivered.
The Horne Mudlitz VFW Post No. 6377 will have its new club house next to the future Sussex Fire Department dedicated May 12. Wisconsin Senator Bill Proxmire will be on hand for the ceremony. The 70- by 80-foot club house includes a bar and a nice big back open space in addition to a storage basement. The cost for the structure was $80,000.
25 years ago – 1988
Sussex is thinking of annexing land across Highway J (today’s Highway 164) for the first time. Petitioners are coming forward to get this rolling.
Rose Korbeck of Lisbon is now 103 years old. Her secret for a long life is: “Don’t get excited and be cool-headed.”
Dave Anderson is the Sussex Village Administrator.

Long-time Hamilton School Board member Jim Long has stepped sideways on the board, giving up the presidency to fellow member Gale Kolesari.
A 9-year-old Siberian husky was killed in a Hillview fire in Sussex at the home of Karen and Brian Bentrup.
A Sussex woman, Barbara A. Olson, has died as a result of a fall from a horse.

Big local advertisers are Calumet Baking Powder and Castoria (castor oil).
The socialists have purchased a stone quarry, which the powers-that-be do not want. They sent a delegation to Lannon and are thinking (after a tour) of buying the Lannon Davis Quarry.
August Joecks and Michael Murphy of Lannon journeyed to Menomonee Falls on business.
50 years ago, 1963
Willow Springs School will enroll incoming kindergarten students on May 14.
A dead man found in a Lannon culvert earlier this month (May 4) by cousins Alan Troesch, 14, and Alan Buttke, 13, has been identified as a patient of the Milwaukee County Mental Health Institution, Joseph Kalisik, 63. County Coroner James Welch said it appeared that Kalisik crawled into the culvert to keep warm and died of exposure. The culvert was near Custer Lane in Highway 74.

Lisbon voted “yes” to buy the 121-acre Bartlett farm for a village park, for $125,000.
Scott Johns and Jenny Neher are the Hamilton junior prom king and queen.
Forty-nine trophies will be given out this year at the Sussex Kiddies July 4 parade.
Lannon broke Hartland’s 37-game win streak with an 11-8 win. Earlier this season, Lannon had a no-hitter against the Sussex LOL team.

A Lisbon man is accused of shooting a Labrador dog that was chasing his chickens. A 20-gauge shotgun was used.
The search for a missing 12-year-old girl ended successfully when she was found hours later at a friend’s house.
A Colgate man was sentenced for a road rage incident that injured three people.
Five years ago, 2008
Lt. Pete Chycinski, 53, who served 29 years as a Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department deputy and the last 12 years as a big part of the contingent stationed in Sussex, will retire. Adjectives describing him include “well-liked,” “knowledgeable,” “professional,” and “respected.”
A bike blessing ceremony was held at Lisbon Redeemer Church under the leadership of the Rev. Robert “Bob” Ullman.
